The Doorknob Hanging Basket Crochet Pattern | Free Crochet Pattern

The Doorknob Hanging Basket crochet pattern is the perfect project if you only have an hour or less.

This quick pattern creates a lovely basket that not only looks beautiful, but is also quite functional! The

Doorknob basket is worked in the round and includes a handle that fits perfectly around a doorknob or hook.

The hanging basket crochet pattern alternates between single and double crochet, creating a beautiful texture similar to a lemon peel.

The pattern is rated advanced beginner, and a great project to start if you’re wanting to branch out slightly from a beginner project, and learn some new techniques (like working in the round, and in a chain space).

Ways to use a Doorknob Basket

Here are some of my favorite uses for the Doorknob Hanging Basket crochet pattern, but really the ideas are endless:

  • Hang on a doorknob or coat rack/hook to hold keys, dog leash, dog soil bags, etc.
  • On a bathroom door to hold cell phones (so you don’t sit in there too long!!), or an extra roll of toilet paper.
  • As a Christmas stocking or Easter basket alternative (especially great for teens and adults), and can then be used year round for other purposes.
  • On a decorative hook to hold a plant.
  • On a doorknob or hook at your entryway or a business to hold candy. (I used it at my vendor booth one Christmas to hold candy canes that I gave out).
  • Makes a great gift, fill with goodies and give to teacher, friend, postal worker, neighbor, host/hostess, etc.
  • In your RV to hold a flashlight, level, keys, dog soil bags, etc.

Yarn

The Doorknob Hanging Basket crochet pattern is written using size 6 super bulky yarn. I prefer Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick. The color shown above is Fossil.

I also love Bernat Maker, if you use this yarn, you need two strands held together. They recently re-branded and have a bunch of new colors! I’m hoping it’ll be easier to find, now that it was re-branded, but It’s been hard to find in the past, so I suggest stocking up when it’s available.

Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Amazon
Walmart

Sizing

The finished basket should measure approximately 9 ½ inches across at widest point, with an opening diameter of 8″, height 7 – 7 ½” (not including handle), 11 – 11 ½” (including handle).

Gauge | Working in the Round

First 3 Rounds in Pattern = 4 ½ Inches with M Hook
Please be sure to check your gauge before starting, as tension can vary greatly from person to person and depending on the yarn used.

Special Stitches

Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog)
Insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Chain Space (ch-sp)
A chain space is the space/gap in your work that is created by making a chain. The space is located below the chain.  Normally you’d insert your hook into the front and back loops of the stitch, but when you work into a chain space you insert your hook into the space underneath the chain.
