Are you looking to add a really unique crochet stitch to your list? I have the perfect stitch for you. It’s called the Feather Stitch. This stitch creates a chunky design that somewhat emulates a feather. Nevertheless, it’s a beautiful stitch that works well for baskets, planters, and my favorite, PUMPKINS!!!
I usually focus on fairly simple stitches, designs, and techniques, but I’m not going to lie, this one is a little tricky. I’ve included the written instructions as well as photos, but you’ll most likely need to watch the video instructions a few times. Once you have the basic concept down, it’s a breeze!
The Feather Stitch can be worked in the round or in rows. My instructions below are for working in the round, without turning. It’s slightly different when working in rows and turning your work, and actually looks a bit more like a feather. You can find many tutorials online for working in rows.

The Feather Stitch
Written Instructions
The stitch is broken down into two steps. You’ll always begin your round with the beginning feather stitch, and then additional stitches moving forward will be made with the feather stitch.
To set up your project for a feather stitch, the round just before you begin the feather stitch, should typically be a half double crochet, chain 1, skip a stitch, repeated around.
The Beginning Feather Stitch (beg feather st)
Yarn over, insert hook into next chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), **note- when you pull up any loop make sure it is the same height as other loops on hook, bring the hook up parallel to the work so the loop is elongated**, yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch/chain space right below current chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in next chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (7 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.

Feather Stitch (feather st)
Yarn over, insert hook into the same chain space where the last leg of the previous feather was made, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), **note-when you pull up any loop make sure it is the same height as other loops on hook, bring the hook up parallel to the work so the loop is elongated**, yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch/chain space right below current chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in next chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (7 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.
