The Super Chunky Cowl is a beginner crochet pattern you can work up in a few hours or less. It’s the perfect cozy DIY project for Fall and Winter, and would make an affordable Christmas gift for a loved one.
This cozy, chunky cowl, was one of my first scarf patterns and it’s designed for the true beginner. The pattern alternates between single and double crochet to create a pretty texture that looks elevated, yet it’s a breeze to work up. It’s the perfect project to start if you’re just learning to read crochet patterns, because its very basic and only has a few instructions. The best part is you can truly customize it to any size, and using any yarn.
Fun Fact: The Super Chunky Cowl pattern was published by Interweave Editors in a paperback book called Crochet to Calm, back in 2016. The book features 18 lovely patterns by many talented designers. You can get your copy HERE.

The pattern instructions are written for a super bulky yarn, however the pattern is flexible with just about any yarn. (see sizing info below)
The photo shown was made with Michaels Brand Loops and Threads Cozy Wool, but sadly it has been discontinued. Therefore, I recommended Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick as a fantastic replacement.
Sizing
I have included instructions for child and adult sizes (measurements shown below)
Child 3-10 Years – Approximately 20” Circumference & 9” Deep
Adult One Size Fits Most – Approximately 28” Circumference & 13” Deep
The pattern instructions allow you to make the scarf in any size, using any yarn and hook. Simply follow the pattern instructions until the desired length and depth are met, as outlined below:
Adjusting Circumference – add or subtract chains from the foundation chain (making sure you end with an even number of stitches).
Adjusting Depth – add or subtract rounds alternating between round 2 and 3.
Additionally, if you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. You want a little drape to your project, so if it’s turning out a little stiff try going up a hook size or two.
