How To Make An Easy Crochet Christmas Disc Ornament

After so many requests, I’m excited to share my brand new Crochet Christmas Disc Ornament Pattern! This pattern is based on my popular Christmas Ball Ornament design from 2024, but reimagined for the flat-style disc ornaments.

You’ll love that the Crochet Christmas Disc Ornaments work up quickly, and best of all, they can be customized in endless ways. For example, add ribbon, twine, greenery, berries, or keep it simple and classic. They make wonderful handmade additions to your own Christmas tree, or thoughtful gifts for family and friends.

The ornament pattern is worked in continuous rounds using the spike single crochet stitch, then stretched over a clear glass or plastic disc ornament and cinched closed. It’s an easy technique that even a beginner can master.

If you loved the ball version, you’re going to love this one too. Let’s get started!

Styling Ideas For The Crochet Christmas Disc Ornament

The Crochet Christmas Disc Ornament looks beautiful hanging on a Christmas tree, but it also makes a stunning accent on a mantle, stairway garland, or displayed on a decorative tray or bowl.

Try making them in different sizes, experimenting with different yarns, and mixing them with my Crochet Christmas Ornament Pattern for a charming holiday vignette.

These ornaments also make thoughtful gifts and keepsakes. For a special touch, package them in a decorative box with a clear lid. I like to use white or kraft colored cake or cupcake boxes from Walmart.

Yarn Suggestions

The Crochet Christmas Ball Ornament Pattern is written using Bernat Maker, a size 5 bulky tube-style yarn made of cotton on the outside with a nylon core. I love this yarn because it has some stretch, making it easy to fit around the disc ornaments with a little wiggle room. The sample ornaments shown are in the colors Cream, Clay, and Lichen.

Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)
Walmart

Yarn Alternatives

Most size 5 yarns, or two strands of worsted weight yarn held together, work well for this pattern. I especially like two strands of worsted cotton as a substitute for the Bernat Maker.

As long as your yarn has some stretch, the ornament will still turn out nicely, even if your gauge is slightly smaller than listed. You may need to add or subtract rounds after the last round to adjust the fit.

This is a size 4 velvet yarn, so I held two strands together. I was able to follow the pattern as written for both sizes, but skipped three rounds before fastening off. The colors shown are Olive and Red.

Ornaments & Embellishments

You can use clear plastic or glass disc ornaments for this project. I chose clear plastic discs from Hobby Lobby and Michaels, but you can find them almost anywhere during the holiday season. Target, Michaels, Walmart, and Amazon all carry them. For size, I used 8cm (3.15”) and 10cm (3.94”).

The ornaments look cute as is, but you can also dress them up with greenery, berries, bells, or twine. I buy floral picks from the Christmas sections at Hobby Lobby and Michaels, then disassemble the picks with wire cutters and hot glue the pieces in place.

For a finishing touch, I like to add seasonal wooden tags. The ones shown are from Savlabot.
I share more details about my favorite crochet tags in this blog post.

Sizing For The Crochet Christmas Disc Ornament

The pattern comes in two sizes, based on the ornament’s diameter at its widest point (side to side):

Small – Fits 8 cm/3.15 Inch, Clear Glass or Plastic Christmas Disc Ornament
Large – Fits 10 cm/3.94 Inch, Clear Glass or Plastic Christmas Disc Ornament

To customize, add or remove HDC increase rounds to adjust width, and spike stitch rounds to adjust height. The final HDC round should end with an odd stitch count: if even, skip the last stitch. Follow the remainder of the pattern as is, you’ll have a different stitch count.

Special Stitches

Spike Single Crochet (spk-sc)
The spike single crochet stitch is worked following the same steps as a regular single crochet stitch, but instead of working into the current round/row, the hook is inserted 1 or more rounds/rows below the working round/row. The lower you go, the longer the stitch. In this pattern we’ll be working in one round below.

Step 1: Insert your hook into the next stitch, 1 round below the current round.
Step 2: Pull up a loop the same height as your current round.
Step 3: Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook (just like a regular single crochet).

Forming Around the Christmas Disc Ornament

Note: The finished crochet piece should cover most of the ornament before fully cinching closed. If using a less stretchy yarn, you may need to adjust the pattern accordingly by adding or subtracting rounds of the spike stitch.

With piece right side facing out, weave remaining tail end in & out around last round of stitches (working in front loops only), DO NOT CINCH CLOSED YET.  Stretch crochet piece around Christmas ornament, and once positioned and securely in place, finish cinching the remaining tail end tightly around the top of Christmas ornament.  Fasten off and weave in loose end.
