Yarn Suggestions For Your Spike Stitch Crochet Basket & Tray

The Spike Stitch Basket and Tray Pattern is written using two strands of size 6 super bulky yarn. I prefer Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick. I used the colors Whipped Cream, Squash, and Hazelwood.

Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarn
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)

Alternative Yarn Suggestions

You’re welcome to experiment with different yarns, just keep in mind that gauge and finished weight may vary depending on the fiber content and thickness. Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick would also work well, but the finished basket may be a bit larger and denser, as the yarn is a little thicker.

Tips & Tricks

The key to having a sturdy basket is to create a very tight stitch, using a thick yarn. The completed basket should be sturdy, yet flexible. Over time it can become misshaped.  You can easily re-shape with your hands. I also find it helpful to form it around a heavy bowl about the same size, then remove the bowl to reveal a nice, new, even shape. If your basket is quite loose, you may need to go down a hook size or two.

Optional Leather Handles & Screw-On Tags

The baskets are beautiful when displayed as-is, but adding a leather handle or tag gives them a polished, finished look.

Leather Handles

For the handles I used 1.5-inch wide genuine leather strips from Michaels. Each package includes a 42-inch strip that can be cut to your desired length. Similar options can be found on Amazon or at other craft stores. You can also purchase pre-made handles that already include holes and screws for easy attachment.

Basket: Cut two strips, 5 inches long.
Tray: Cut 2 strips, 7.5 inches long.
For the tray you’ll need to add a small scrap piece of leather to the inside of the basket before tightening the screws (see photo below). This reinforces the handle and prevents the screws from pulling through the crochet stitches. You’ll need four small pieces for each basket.

Using a leather hole punch, add two holes to each end of the strips. (For the tray, also punch holes in the small scrap reinforcement pieces.)

Position the handles on each side of the basket (see photo below) and secure them in place with Chicago screws (available on Amazon). I prefer purchasing a box of Chicago screws in varying lengths, so you can adjust based on the thickness of your project. I typically use 5 x 10mm in bronze, but for this project the 5 x 15mm works best.

Screw-On Tags

The screw on tags I use are from Angie & Britt and Savlabot. (I share more details about my favorite crochet tags in a separate blog post here).

The tags are attached with Chicago Screws, which I purchase on Amazon.

Gauge Working in The Round

First 3 Rounds in Pattern = 4.5 Inches with L Hook

Please be sure to check your gauge before starting, as tension can vary greatly from person to person and depending on the yarn used.

Special Stitches

Spike Double Crochet (spdc)
A spike double crochet is an elongated double crochet worked into a lower row/round, usually one or two rows/rounds below the current one. The lower you go, the longer the stitch. In this pattern we’ll be working in one round below the current round.

Step 1: Yarn over, insert your hook under the top two loops of the indicated stitch, one round below the current round.
Step 2: Yarn over, pull up a long loop to the same height as your current round.
Step 3: Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through remaining two loops (just like a regular double crochet).

Invisible join
After completion of the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a tapestry needle, weave tail under both loops of the 2nd stitch of the round, to create a false stitch, then weave through the back loop of the last stitch of the round. Weave in ends.

Chain Space (ch-sp)
A chain space is the space/gap that is created by making a chain. The space is located below the chain.  Normally, you’d insert your hook into the front and back loops of the stitch, but when you work into a chain space, you insert your hook into the space underneath the chain.
