Valentine's Day crochet heart garland in cream, red, and pink, draped on a white cabinet.

Crochet Heart Garland | Free Crochet Pattern

Let’s make an adorable CROCHET HEART GARLAND for Valentine’s Day!! I love this quick and easy crochet project, especially right after the holidays, when you’re trying to get back into the swing of things. It’s a beginner friendly, low time commitment project, and I’ve included a full video tutorial if you’re a visual learner.

This quick crochet heart garland pattern creates a lovely and flowing, three strand garland, that looks beautiful draped on a mirror, banister, or fireplace mantle. The crochet heart garland is worked in three separate strands and then tied together, to create a nice dimensional look when grouped together.

I love that the crochet heart garland uses very basic crochet stitches, making it really fast and easy! I’d say you could work this up in an hour or less. It’s rated advanced beginner, and if you’re familiar with basic crochet stitches, and how to work in the round, you’ll do great!

How To Display Crochet Heart Garland

Below is an example of how I styled the crochet heart garland around my mirror, using small command hooks in each corner to secure. I think it would also look amazing on a mantle. I swapped out my Christmas garland for the heart garland, so basically anywhere you’d put Christmas garland would work nicely!

Yarn

The Crochet Heart Garland is written using size 6 super bulky yarn. I prefer Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick. The colors shown are Starlight and Cranberry.

For the variegated yarn shown, I used Joann’s exclusive brand called Big Twist Winter. I believe this yarn is seasonal in the winter only. Lion Brand Thick & Quick has some nice, variegated colors if you can’t find it.

Big Twist Winter yarn had some fun colors. In my example, I used the color Candy Cane, but I also loved Red and Peppermint, which had little pieces of tinsel throughout! I found the Big Twist yarn to be slightly smaller in gauge than Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick, but gauge is not important in this pattern, so I didn’t find it necessary to adjust my hook size.

Sizing

The finished garland measured about 90 inches (not including the tail ends or tassels), and you can easily adjust the size to your liking. Just make sure each strand is slightly longer than the next, so it drapes like shown in the photos.

Video Instructions

Braided Strand Instructions

– I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in the color Starlight for this strand.
– Create 3 strands total, and then they’ll be braided together.
– My completed strands measured approximately 90″. Adjust the length to your liking.

Row 1. *Starting with a 12” beg tail, ch200, fasten off leaving a 12” tail end. (200chs).
Repeat from * two more times for a total of 3 strands.

Take the 3 beg tail ends and tie them together with a knot. The knot should butt up to the stitches, so the tails are still hanging loosely. Reference full video tutorial or photo below to see where it should be knotted, (the photo below references all garland strands knotted together, but it’s the same instructions for the braided strands only).

Secure one end of the tail ends and braid the three strands together. Note: I tied one end to a shower rod, you can also use the rod in your closet, tape it down on a long counter or table, or put it under a heavy book or pan.

Once complete, take the remaining tail ends and tie in a knot together, as you did on the opposite side. Trim the tail ends evenly, leaving them long. Move to instructions below.

Variegated Strand Instructions

– I used Joann’s exclusive brand called Big Twist Winter in the color Candy Cane, but use any size 6 yarn you prefer.
– This strand should hang slightly lower than the braided strand above. Adjust the length if needed, making sure to end with a ch3 after the repeat.

Row 1. Starting with a 12” beg tail, (ch6, working in back hump of ch, sl st in 3rd ch from hook)44x, ch3, fasten off leaving a 12 inch tail. (267chs, 44sl st)

Move to instructions below.

Heart Instructions

Notes
– I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in the color Cranberry for the hearts.
– Create 10 hearts total (or desired amount for your garland length)
– This strand should hang slightly lower than the variegated strand above. Adjust the length if needed.

Rnd 1. Create a magic circle, ch3, (working in circle) 2tr, ch1, 3dc, ch1, 1tr, ch1, 3dc, ch1, 2tr, ch3, sl st.

Take a long piece of twine, ribbon, or yarn (make sure it’ll hang slightly lower than the previous strand) and thread the hearts on using a tapestry needle. Adjust the spacing as desired. I attached the twine to the top corners of each heart. Reference full video tutorial or photo below for example:

Attaching Strands Together

Take the beg tails of each garland strand and knot them together. The knot should butt up to the stitches, so the tails are still hanging loosely.

Making sure each strand hangs slightly lower than the next, take the ending tails and knot them together as you did on the opposite side. Trim the tail ends evenly, to your desired length. I like to leave mine long. Reference full video tutorial or photo below for example.

See below for optional tassels.

Tassels | Optional

A full video tutorial on how I created the tassels can be found HERE.

– I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in the color Starlight and Joann’s exclusive brand called Big Twist Winter in the color Candy Cane.
– Create 2 tassels, 1 for each end.
– You’ll need a book, piece of cardboard, or cell phone to use as a template to wrap the yarn around. The length of your item of choosing, will determine the length of the tassel. For size reference, I used the long end of my cell phone.

Step 1 | Wind The Tassel

Starting at one end, holding two strands of yarn together, wrap the yarn around template of choosing, approximately 15x (stop at the same end you started), cut the ends.

Making a yarn tassel step 1

Step 2 | Knot The Top Of The Tassel

Cut one strand of yarn about 12″ long, thread on tapestry needle and push needle under the top loops of the yarn. Tie in a knot, pulling tightly.

Step 3. Knot The Body Of The Tassel

Gently remove the piece from your template. Cut another strand of yarn about 12″ long, and wrap it around the body of the tassel, about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the tassel. Pull tightly and tie in a knot.

Making a yarn tassel step 4

Step 4 | Finishing The Ends

Take your scissors and cut through the bottom loops of the tassel. Trim the ends to make sure they’re nice and even.

Step 5 | Adding To Garland

Take the two strands of yarn from the top of the tassel and tie around each end of the garland.

Your Valentine’s crochet heart garland is complete, hang and enjoy!
