Crochet Poinsettia Appliqué Pattern for Christmas

The Crochet Poinsettia Appliqué Pattern is a quick, festive project that adds an easy Christmas touch to your crochet pieces. With its pointed petals, simple center, and two leaves, it works up quickly and can be used in several different ways throughout the holiday season.

Designed to pair perfectly with my crochet towel holder patterns, the center is left slightly open so the poinsettia can slide right over the button and be swapped out with other seasonal appliqués. It also works well as a stocking charm, bag charm, garland embellishment, gift topper, or basket decoration.

If you’re looking for more easy projects, you can browse all of my crochet towel holder patterns here.

I made mine with two strands of Lion Brand Made With Love – The Cottony One held together for a fuller, more substantial flower. Traditional red, gold, and green give it a classic Christmas look, but you could easily change the colors to match your own holiday décor.

Ways To Use The Crochet Poinsettia Appliqué

The Crochet Poinsettia Appliqué Pattern was designed to pair perfectly with my crochet towel holder patterns:

– The Button Closure Crochet Towel Holder
– The Original Crochet Towel Holder Pattern

The center of the poinsettia is intentionally left slightly open so it can slide right over the button on the Button Closure Towel Holder, making it easy to remove or swap out for different flower appliqués.

When using the poinsettia with the towel holder, choose a round button approximately ¾–1 inch in diameter instead of the toggle-style button listed in the towel holder pattern.

When attaching the button, leave a small amount of space between the button and the towel holder so the flower can easily slide on and off, and be sure the button is securely sewn to withstand repeated use.

If you prefer my Original Towel Holder Pattern (with two rings), you can:
– Sew the flower directly onto the holder (this will not be removable), or
– Sew a round button onto the front of the holder and attach the flower around the button as described above.

Although the poinsettia was designed with towel holders in mind, it can also be used for plenty of other Christmas and winter projects.

Yarn Suggestions For The Crochet Poinsettia Appliqué Pattern

The Poinsettia Appliqué pattern was designed using two strands of worsted weight yarn held together. Cotton or cotton-blend yarn is recommended when using the poinsettia on kitchen items such as towel holders.

My preferred yarn for this project is Lion Brand Made With Love – The Cottony One. Although it is not 100% cotton, it works nicely for this design since the flower does not need to withstand heat.

I used the colors Gold Medal, Robbie Red, and Olive Twist.

Alternative Yarn Suggestions

You’re welcome to experiment with different yarns. Keep in mind that the finished size and thickness may vary depending on the fiber content and yarn weight.

The poinsettia can easily be made in different sizes by adjusting the yarn and hook used. For kitchen items, I recommend cotton yarn, but other fibers may work well depending on the project.

Sizing For The Crochet Poinsettia Appliqué Pattern

The Poinsettia Appliqué comes in one finished size. Approximately 4.25 inches across at the widest point, or about 4.5 inches across including the leaves.

The size of the poinsettia can easily be adjusted by changing the yarn weight and hook size.

  • For a smaller poinsettia, try using one strand of worsted weight yarn with a slightly smaller hook.
  • For a larger poinsettia, try using a super bulky yarn with a larger hook.

The sample below compares two strands of worsted weight yarn versus one strand. I used a 5mm hook with two strands and a 4.5mm hook with one strand. With one strand, the flower measured approximately 3.5 inches across at the widest point, or about 4 inches across including the leaves.

Gauge

Gauge is not critical for this pattern. When made with the recommended yarn and hook, the finished flower should measure approximately 4.25 inches across.

The crochet poinsettia flower appliqué pattern worked up with one versus two strands of yarn.

Video Instructions For The Crochet Poinsettia Appliqué Pattern

Below you’ll find the full video tutorial for the Crochet Poinsettia Appliqué Pattern. I’ll show you how to make the flower center, work the petals in the back loops, add the leaves, and leave the center open so it can slide over a button when used with a towel holder.

Written Instructions For The Crochet Poinsettia Appliqué Pattern

Flower Center – Color A

  • Use two strands held together.
  • Beg chs do not count as a st, work 1st st in same st as beg ch/chs.

If attaching around a button

Rnd 1. Create a magic circle, ch1, work 12sc in the circle. (12sc)

Tighten the magic circle slightly, leaving enough space to fit over the button. Join with invisible join method and weave in ends.

If not attaching around a button

Pull the magic circle completely closed, join with invisible join method and weave in ends.

Petals – Color B

  • Attach Color B in BLO of first st of Rnd 1 by inserting hook into the back loop and pulling up a loop.

Rnd 2. Ch3. Working in BLO throughout this rnd, in same st as ch3, work (1dc, 1tr, ch2p, 1tr, 1dc, ch3, slst) to create first petal. *Sk next st, in next st work (slst, ch3, 1dc, 1tr, ch2p, 1tr, 1dc, ch3, slst); rep from * around. Sk last st, join with slst in same st as beg st. (6 petals)

Fasten off and weave in ends securely. Continue to Leaves instructions below.

Leaves – Color C

  • Attach Color C to the backside near the center of the poinsettia by inserting your hook under the loops between two petals (these are not stitches, just loops from the flower construction), then pull up a loop.
  • Photos are shown from the backside of the flower to demonstrate proper placement, but make sure the right side of the flower is facing you while working the leaf.

In the same loops you inserted your hook into, work:
(ch2, dc, 2tr, ch2p, 2tr, dc, ch2, slst) to form a leaf.
Fasten off and weave in ends, then repeat on the opposite side of the flower to create a second leaf.

Note: The leaf should sit flat against the back of the flower. If you can see the yarn pulling through to the front, adjust your placement slightly. When weaving in your ends, you can also use the yarn tails to help secure the leaf in place if needed.

Finishing

Your Poinsettia Appliqué is complete. Attach it to your towel holder or favorite project and enjoy!
