Yarn Suggestions For The Puff Stitch Crochet Stocking

The Puff Stitch Crochet Stocking Pattern is written using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. This is a size 6, super bulky yarn. The colors shown are Kale and Starlight.

Wool Ease T&Q offers many great colors, perfect for Christmas and Winter. A few other colors I like are Red Beacon and Fisherman.

Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarn

Alternative Yarn

Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use. If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. For this pattern I recommend a size 6 yarn, or two strands of size 5 yarn held together.

I haven’t tried any yarn alternatives, for this specific pattern, but I think two strands of Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me might work nicely, or any wool blend yarn that would give a nice organic texture.

Sizing

The Puff Stitch Crochet Stocking comes in two fun sizes:

Please be sure to check your gauge before starting, as tension can vary greatly from person to person and depending on the yarn used.

Special Stitches

9 Loop Puff Stitch (ps)
Crochet puff stitches are a series of unfinished half double crochet stitches that are worked together. They pop out on the backside of your work. For this tutorial, we’re going to use 4 half double crochets, to create our puff stitch. Some puff stitches require a chain 1, to finish off the stitch, but this pattern goes right into a single crochet in the next stitch.

Tip: Work with loose tension and pull loops up to the height of the working row.

Step 1: Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
Step 2: [Yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop]3x (9 loops on hook)
Step 3: Yarn over and pull through all nine loops on hook

Seaming The Puff Stitch Crochet Stocking Together

With rs facing out, fold stocking in half, lining up the foundation row with the final row of stitches. Sl st the side of the stocking together. Do not fasten off, continue to finishing around the opening instructions below.

The Puff Stitch Crochet Stocking Pattern - Seaming Instructions

Finishing Around The Opening

Ch 1, sc evenly around the top opening of the stocking ( I did about 12 sc for size mini & 20 sc for size regular), join with sl st to beg sc. Before fastening off, pull up a long loop for hanging (as shown below), then fasten off and weave in loose end, securing the loop in place tightly.

Note: If you feel the yarn loop isn’t strong enough to hold your stocking, feel free to create a chain instead. Instead of pulling up a loop, ch about 12-15 chs, then sl st in the same stitch as the chs, to join, fasten off and weave in loose end. (I included this variation in the video instructions).

Closing Toe

Turn stocking inside out, take remaining tail end and weave it in and out around row ends of toe, pull tightly, to cinch toe closed. Weave in remaining tail to secure and fasten off. Turn stocking right side out.

Your stocking is complete, add any embellishments you’d like and hang! They look cute with name tags, bells, ribbons, etc.!!

    Hi Erin,
Just made the mini stocking. Super cute! Wondering if you could modify the pattern to make it even smaller? Perhaps 1/2 the size to fit a gift card?
    Thanks!

Thank you Delora, I’m so glad you’re enjoying the pattern! Yes, you could definitely do that, you would just need to decrease the amount of starting chains and play around with the placement of the heal a bit. I am working on a jumbo size this year, but haven’t had plans for anything smaller, I’ll definitely keep this in mind.
