Fun Ways to Style Your Tabletop Witch Hats

These Crochet Tabletop Witch Hats are a fun piece of fall or Halloween decor that can be styled in so many different ways. The hats are designed to stand on their own—no foam cones or forms are needed to help them hold their shape.

Arrange the hats together on a mantel, shelf, decorative tray, or sideboard to create a simple Halloween display, or separate them to add seasonal accents throughout your home. They would also look cute styled with pumpkins, candles, and other fall decor.

Optional Embellishments

The Witch Hats look great just as they are, but they’re also fun to personalize. Add ribbon, faux florals, greenery, small wooden tags (like the “Boo!” tags I used from Savlabot), or other seasonal accents around the brim to match your decorating style.

Most of the embellishments I used came from Michaels or Hobby Lobby, but you’ll find similar ribbon, florals, and seasonal picks at many craft stores or online retailers.

If you’re looking for crochet labels, tags, and other finishing touches, I also put together a blog post sharing some of my favorite options, which you can find here.

Yarn Requirements For Your Witch Hat Set

The pattern is written using two strands of Lion Brand Rewind Tape Yarn held together. Rewind is a size 5, bulky polyester tape yarn with a lightweight, slightly textured finish.

I chose this yarn specifically to create a structured, woven look similar to wicker. Holding two strands together adds extra stability, allowing the finished witch hats to stand on their own without foam cones or forms. The colors shown are Citronella, Moto Jacket, and Willow. Below are the specific suppliers I highly recommend for sourcing your supplies:

Yarn Alternatives

A size 6, super bulky yarn can be substituted for the two strands of bulky yarn held together. Other bulky yarn combinations may also work, but the finished look and structure will vary depending on the yarn you choose.

If substituting yarn, be sure to check your gauge and use a tight enough stitch so the finished hats remain structured and freestanding.

Sizing For Your Tabletop Witch Hats

The pattern includes instructions for two sizes of tabletop witch hats. The finished measurements listed below are approximate and may vary slightly based on yarn, hook size, and tension.

  • Regular: Approximately 8″ tall x 8″ wide at the brim
  • Large: Approximately 10″ tall x 9.5″ wide at the brim

The witch hats are designed to stand on their own without foam cones or forms.

Gauge

After completing Rnd 6, the hat should measure approximately 2.5 inches tall and 1.75 inches in diameter.

Gauge is not critical for this pattern; however, differences in tension may affect the finished size and structure of the hat. When checking gauge, do not stretch or pull the hat. Allow the piece to rest naturally. Measure the height from the top point to the bottom edge of the completed rnd and measure the diameter straight across the bottom opening.

Free Chunky Crochet Tabletop Witch Hats — Hat Body

  • Do not join at the end of each rnd. Use a st marker to mark the 1st st of each rnd.
  • Work all rnds of the hat body in the BLO.
  • The increase sts (2sc in same st) are staggered throughout the pattern to help prevent a visible line from forming along the body of the hat.
  • To help minimize visible gaps at the increase points, work the increases (2sc in same st) using the yarn-under sc method. You can use this method throughout for tighter sts or go down a hook size.

Note: The first rnd or two may feel a bit tedious due to the narrow, pointed shape at the top of the hat. This is completely normal and will become easier as you continue.

Optional Color Band: Work Rnds 16–19 for Regular or Rnds 21–25 for Large in a contrasting color. Carry the main color up the inside; do not fasten off.
