Free Crochet Planter Pattern | The Posh Planter

Let’s make a crochet planter! One of my favorite things to design is a crochet planter pattern, and today I’m going to share The Posh Planter pattern with you. This pattern is so versatile, and I’m even going to show you how to add a cute touch for Valentine’s Day!

The Posh Planter (crochet planter pattern) works up quickly, using super bulky yarn. It’s an advanced beginner pattern, which uses the waistcoat and reverse single crochet stitches. The waistcoat and reverse single crochet stitches are a variation of the single crochet. The crochet planter pattern is a great project to try if you’re ready to learn a few new stitches. I’ve also included a full video tutorial if you’re a visual learner.

Planter Sources

Here are some of my favorite planter sources and ways to display The Posh Planter (crochet planter pattern).

My original design was created to fit around a glass ball vase. I crocheted the regular size cover (instructions below) and stretched it around a glass vase (I used a 4.875” round vase from the Dollar Tree and worked the last round of reverse single crochet a bit tightly, so it fit snugly around the top of the vase).  I filled it with floral stems and greenery found at Ikea (or any craft store) and floral foam to hold the stems in place.

The regular size cover holds the 3 ½” Fejka Potted Plants from Ikea (shown below) and the mini cover fits the 2 ¼” faux Fejka brand plants that are carried at Ikea (shown below). There will be a bit of space left around the sides that you can leave as is or fill with Spanish moss to give a more finished look.

The plants below are from the Threshold collection at Target. I found these recently (2024) and they are some of my favorite faux plants, to date. They are extremely realistic looking, and they have a lot of different styles to choose from. The three styles shown are my favorite!

Yarn

The Posh Planter (crochet planter pattern) is written using size 6 super bulky yarn. I prefer Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick.

Sizing

The Posh Planter (crochet planter pattern) comes in two sizes.

Size Mini – Measures approximately 3.5 inch diameter and 3.25 inches tall
Size Regular – Measures approximately 4.5 inch diameter and 4.5 inches tall

You can easily adjust the size of your crochet planter. To increase or decrease the diameter, add or subtract increase rounds before starting the sides of the planter. To adjust the height of your basket, add or subtract rounds of the waistcoat stitch.

Tips and Tricks

– The covers are flexible, but I find them to be quite sturdy and keep their shape well if using a planter inside.
– You can also use floral foam or Spanish moss to help fill in the extra space around flowers or plants.
– If using a real plant, I recommend using a pot or liner inside and do not allow the yarn to get wet.

Screw on Tags

I recently created a blog post on the different crochet tags I use. The full post with extensive detail can be found here.

– For this crochet planter pattern, I used Ultrasuede, screw on, custom logo tags from: Angie & Britt
– The Valentine’s screw on tags are vegan leather from Savlabot.
– You’ll also need Chicago Screws to attach the tags.

The Waistcoat Stitch (wc)
The Waistcoat stitch is also known as center post stitch, center single crochet, or knit stitch. It’s basically a single crochet, but you insert your hook in between the middle of the post, rather than the usual top two loops. Then, complete the stitch just as you would a single crochet. You’ll want to crochet a bit loosely to make it easier to work into. Watch Video Instructions Here.
