How To Make The String Of Hearts Crochet Garland Pattern

Are you looking for a quick and easy crochet project to make for Valentine’s Day? Let’s learn how to make The String of Hearts Crochet Garland Pattern!!

I don’t know about you, but after the holidays, I’m looking for a quick and easy crochet project. I love to add just a few Valentine’s pieces of decor around my home after Christmas, and this beginner friendly, low time commitment project, makes the perfect addition.

The String of Hearts Crochet Garland Pattern takes a few of my existing crochet patterns and turns them into a brand new garland design, with just a few small changes in placement. The pattern uses a few basic crochet stitches and is rated advanced beginner. You’ll have the opportunity to work in the round and learn a fun decrease technique, that you’re sure to use for years to come!

How To Style The String Of Hearts Crochet Garland

Below is an example of how I styled The String of Hearts Crochet Garland around a fireplace mantel. I used small command hooks, in each corner of the mantel, to secure the twine. Simply tie a knot around the hook. I like to create a nice drape in the center. The garland would also look amazing hanging on a mirror or hutch.

The String of Hearts Crochet Garland pattern worked up in red, pink, and cream, and hanging on a white mantel decorated for Valentine's Day.

Sizing

The String of Hearts Crochet Garland Pattern length is fully customizable. I made 5 hearts and 10 balls, and the garland fit perfectly on my fireplace mantle that measures 45 inches long. When measuring the twine length, cut it several feet longer than you need, to allow room for drape and hanging.

Video Instructions For The String Of Hearts Crochet Garland Pattern

Heart Written Instructions

– I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in the color Cranberry for the hearts.
– Create 5 hearts total (or desired amount for your garland length)

Rnd 1. With N hook, create a magic circle, ch3, (working in circle) 2tr, ch1, 3dc, ch1, 1tr, ch1, 3dc, ch1, 2tr, ch3, sl st. Fasten off and weave in loose ends. Set aside and continue to ball garland instructions below.

Crochet Ball Garland Written Instructions

– Create 2 balls for each heart you crocheted above (I made 5 in Fisherman, 2 in Potion, and 3 in Rouge)
– Beg ch of each rnd does not count as st, work 1st st in same st as beg ch.

Rnd 1. With L hook & a 24” beg tail, create a magic circle, ch1, work 6 sc in circle, join with sl st. (6sc)
Rnd 2. Ch1, work 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st. (12sc)
Rnd 3. Inv-scdec around, join with sl st. (6sc)

Fasten off leaving a long tail end. Weave in the beg tail to secure and then stuff tail inside the ball, no need for Polyfil! Take ending tail and weave in and out of the front loops of last round, cinch closed, weave in loose ends, and fasten off.

Adding The Embellishments To The Twine

Step 1

Take a long piece of twine (approximately 30 inches), thread onto a tapestry needle. Insert the needle through to the top center of the heart (as shown below). Remove the needle and make sure each piece of twine is pulled evenly (to the same height). Tie a knot in the top center of the heart to secure.

Step 2

Take the remaining twine tails (that are attached to the heart), and thread them back onto the tapestry needle. Take a crochet ball, thread twine through the center of the ball (where the magic circle was created), and push the needle through the top (where the ball was cinched closed). Add the second ball to the twine in the same manner as the first ball.

Step 3

Adjust the spacing between the crochet balls as desired. Take the remaining two twine tails and tie a bow around a long piece of twine (long enough to cover the length of the mantel or mirror you’re putting it on).

Tie all remaining heart strands across the long piece of twine, and space as desired.

Your String of Hearts Crochet Garland is complete, hang and enjoy!!
