Sherpa Yarn Tips

Sherpa yarn can be challenging to work with, as you can’t see the stitches easily, so it’s not recommended for beginners. Below are some tips to help you along the way.

– Since you can’t see the stitches well, you’ll need to feel for the next stitch/gap and insert your hook there. This does make the project somewhat more forgiving, as mistakes aren’t easily seen.

– Using a stitch marker to mark the 1st stitch of the round is helpful. You can also mark the last stitch of the round for even more clarity.

– Make sure to keep track of the number of stitches and rounds completed, as it’s very difficult to count once the stitches are completed.

Yarn Alternatives For The Quick Sherpa Crochet Bag

This pattern was designed specifically for sherpa yarn. Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but keep in mind the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use. You can achieve a very different looking bag by switching to another style yarn, and I’m sure it would be just as cute!

Optional Bag Liner

Crochet bags often benefit from a liner. This will also help prevent stretching. You can sew in a fabric liner if you prefer, or opt for no-sew purse inserts available on Amazon.

Sizing For The Quick Sherpa Crochet Bag

The Quick Sherpa Crochet Bag (lying flat) measures approximately 9 inches tall and 10.5-11 inches wide.

You can adjust the height of the bag by adding or removing rounds of half double crochet before or after the color change. However, more significant changes may require additional modifications to the rest of the pattern.

If you’re comfortable making more advanced adjustments, you can also add or subtract from the starting number of foundation chains. Keep in mind that this may require changes when centering the handles, but the same basic pattern structure can still be used.

Optional Screw-On Tags

I have a blog post on the different crochet tags I use. The full post with extensive detail can be found here.

For The Quick Sherpa Crochet Bag, I used Ultrasuede, screw-on, custom logo tags from Angie & Britt. I also love the vegan faux suede tags from Savlabot.

Note: You’ll also need Chicago Screws to attach the tags.

6 rows and 8hdc = 4 Inches with L Hook

Please check your gauge before starting, as tension can vary greatly from person to person and depending on the yarn used.

Special Stitches

Chain Space (ch-sp)
A chain space is the space/gap in your work that is created by making a chain. The space is located below the chain.  Normally, you’d insert your hook into the front and back loops of the stitch, but when you work into a chain space, you insert your hook into the space underneath the chain.
Reference photo below for example:

Half Double Crochet Two Together (hdc2tog)
Yarn over, insert hook in stitch and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, draw up a loop (5 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through all 5 loops on hook (one hdc2tog created).

Invisible join
After completion of the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a tapestry needle, weave tail end under both loops of the 2nd stitch of round. Next, weave through the back loop only of the last stitch of the round. Weave in tail.

Written Instructions For The Quick Sherpa Crochet Bag Pattern

– The pattern is worked in a continuous rnd. Mark 1st st st of each rnd with a st marker.
– Some reference photos are shown with Lion Brand Cover Story Lazy Days Thick & Quick, this will allow you to see the st placement easier, as the sherpa yarn is difficult to see.

Color A – Foundation Ch. Loosely ch16.

Rnd 1. 2hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 13chs, 4hdc in last ch, working along the backside of foundation ch, hdc in next 13chs,   2hdc in last ch. (34hdc)

Note: Do not work in the backside of the last st of the foundation ch (the st that you added 4hdc in), but do work the last 2hdc in the backside of the 1st st.

Rnd 2. 2hdc in next st, hdc15, 2hdc in next 2sts, hdc15, 2hdc in last st. (38hdc)
Rnd 3. 2hdc in next st, hdc17, 2hdc in next 2sts, hdc17, 2hdc in last st. (42hdc)
Rnds 4-6. Hdc in each st around. (42hdc)

Finishing Off Color A

Rnd 9. *Hdc in next 4sts, hdc2tog, repeat from * around. (35hdc)

Handles

The handles should be centered based on the st counts I have listed in the following rnds, however, the sherpa yarn is hard to see, so your handles may be slightly off centered. Simply adjust the number of hdc between each handle in order to make yours centered.

Rnd 10. Hdc in next 9sts, (starting 1st handle) ch6, sk next 6sts, hdc in next 12sts, (starting 2nd handle) ch6, sk next 6sts, hdc in last 2sts. (23hdc, 12chs)

Rnd 11. Hdc in next 9sts, 7hdc in ch-sp, hdc in next 12sts, 7hdc in ch-sp, hdc in last 2sts. (37hdc)

Note: When working rnd 12, make sure to work into the ch-sp of the handle, not in the top of the hdc. You’ll want to work the sc all the way around the sts to create a super chunky handle.

Rnd 12. Sl st in next 9sts, 7sc in ch-sp, sl st in next 12sts, 7sc in ch-sp, sl st in last 2sts. (14sc, 23sl st)

Finishing Off

Fasten off using the invisible join method and weave in loose ends. Your Quick Sherpa Crochet Bag is complete, enjoy!!
