Are you looking for a unique, crochet basket pattern for Easter? Let’s learn how to make The Crochet Carrot Basket Pattern!
Baskets are a favorite of mine, and the addition of the cute carrots, really put The Crochet Carrot Basket Pattern, on the top of my list!
The Crochet Carrot Basket Pattern calls for Bernat Blanket yarn and is rated intermediate, due to its slightly advanced color change method. If you’re new to color changes, have no fear, I’ve included a bunch of pictures, as well as a full video tutorial.
In addition to the color change technique, you’ll learn to work in the round, and how to create the 2 double crochet bobble stitch.
Grab you hook and yarn, and let’s get started!

Yarn Suggestions For The Crochet Carrot Basket Pattern
The Crochet Carrot Basket Pattern is written using size 6 super bulky yarn. I prefer Bernat Blanket & Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn.
Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)
The colors shown below are:
Vintage White, Green, & Melon

Alternative Yarn Suggestions
Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out smaller or larger depending on what you use. If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. The best way to create a sturdy basket is to use a nice thick yarn and tight stitch.
Some of my favorite yarn alternatives are as follows:
Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (turns out a little smaller, but a bit sturdier)
Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn (turns out quite a bit smaller, but much sturdier)
Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarns

Screw on Tags
I created a blog post on the different crochet tags I use. The full post with extensive detail can be found here.
For The Crochet Carrot Basket Pattern, I used faux suede, screw on, seasonal tags from Savlabot on Etsy. The size shown below is size mini in the color latte.
– You’ll also need Chicago Screws to attach the tags.

Sizing For The Crochet Carrot Basket
The Crochet Carrot Basket Pattern is offered in three sizes.
Mini – Approximate Finished Size, Diameter 5 ½”- 6”, Height 3”
Medium – Approximate Finished Size, Diameter 6 ½ -7”, Height 3”
Tray – Approximate Finished Size, Diameter 9 – 9 ½”, Height 3”
The pattern is worked in increments of 3.
The pattern can be easily adjusted, by adding or subtracting increase rounds, making sure the base (rounds of hdc) end in an increment of 3.
To add height, you can add as many rounds of single crochet as you’d like, after completing the color change rounds, making sure to end the last round with slip stitches.

Special Stitches
No-Cut Join Method – Full video instructions here
This method creates a less visible seam, especially when working in the back or third loop only.
Instead of joining the end of a round with a slip stitch, remove hook from loop. Insert hook from back to front under both bars of first stitch of round. Put working yarn back onto hook and draw through to the back. Pull loop tightly to draw stitches together, then pull working yarn to draw loop back to usual size.
Invisible join
After completion of the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a tapestry needle, weave tail end under both loops of the first stitch of the round. Next, weave through the back loop only, of the last stitch of the round. Weave in tail.
Color Changes
Normally, you would change color on the last pull through of the last stitch. With this pattern the technique is a little different. You want the top of every stitch to finish off in the main color, leaving only the front of the stitch in the contrasting color.
For example, in this pattern, your main color is white. When you get to color B (an orange bobble stitch), you will use the special color change techniques below, to work your stitch. The front of the stitch is the only part that changes color, and the top of the stitch remains white.
I prefer to crochet across my contrasting yarn, but you can carry it, if you don’t mind having floats inside of your basket.
Bobble Stitch Color Change with Color B (carrot)
Crochet bobble stitches are a series of unfinished double crochet stitches that are worked together. For this tutorial, we’re going to use 2 double crochets, to create our bobble stitch.
When you get to the bobble stitch with Color B, drop the Main Color then complete the following steps:
Step 1: Yarn over with Color B, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook, 2 CB, 1 MC)

Step 2: Yarn over with Color B and pull through 2 loops. (2 loops on hook, 1 CB, 1 MC)

Step 3: Yarn over with Color B, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook. (3 loops on hook, 2 CB, 1 MC)

Step 4: Drop Color B, pick up Main Color, yarn over and pull through remaining 3 loops on hook.

Single Crochet Color Change with Color C (carrot top)
The single crochets (made with Color C) are worked in the center of the bobble stitches from the previous round. Instead of inserting your hook in the top of the stitch as usual, insert your hook between the two posts, as shown in the 1st photo below
When you get to the single crochet with Color C, drop the Main Color then complete the following steps:
Step 1: Insert hook in indicated stitch (in this case in the center of bobble), with Color C, yarn over and pull up a loop. (2 loops on hook, 1 CC, 1 MC)

Step 2: Drop Color C, pick up Main Color, yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops on hook.

Tip & Tricks
The key to having a sturdy basket it to create a very tight stitch, using a thick yarn. The completed basket should be sturdy, yet flexible.
Over time it can become misshaped. You can easily re-shape with your hands, and if the carrots become inverted, you can push them outward.
I also find it helpful to form it around a heavy bowl about the same size, then remove the bowl to reveal a nice, new, even shape. If you’re basket is quite loose, you may need to go down a hook size or two.

Aww, thank you so much for your kind words! You’re very welcome. I’m so glad it was easy for you to follow, as I know the color change can be a little confusing.
