Yarn Suggestions For The Jumbo Crochet Bunny Basket Pattern

The Jumbo Crochet Bunny Basket Pattern is written using size 7 jumbo yarn. I prefer Bernat® Blanket Extra Thick™ Yarn. This yarn can also be found under the name Bernat Blanket Big. I used the color Vintage White.

The Bernat® Blanket Extra Thick™ Yarn is very thick. If you’re not used to working with such thick yarn, it can be difficult at first, but I promise, if you keep going it will get easier!

I found the knife/overhand grip worked best, even though I’m typically a pencil grip. The overhand grip gave me a little more strength to pull the heavy yarn through, especially since the basket requires a bit of a tight stitch.

Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)

For the tail I used a small amount of Lion Brand Go For Faux super bulky yarn, in the color Husky.

Alternative Yarn Suggestions

Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out smaller or larger depending on what you use.

If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. The best way to create a sturdy basket is to use a nice thick yarn and tight stitch.

I haven’t tried any alternative yarns for The Jumbo Crochet Bunny Basket Pattern, but there are several yarn alternatives to Bernat Blanket Extra Thick yarn, that can be found from the suppliers below.

Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarns AR Workshop® Chunky Knit Yarn
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)

Gauge | Working in the Round

First Round in Pattern = 5.5 Inches with X/25mm Crochet Hook

Please be sure to check your gauge before starting, as tension can vary greatly from person to person and depending on the yarn used.

Special Stitches

Treble or Triple Crochet (tr)
Yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over again and pull through next 2 loops on hook, yarn over pull through last two loops on hook.

No-Cut Join Method
Instead of joining the end of a round with a slip stitch, remove hook from loop.

Insert hook from back to front under both bars of first stitch of round. Put loop back onto hook and draw through to the back. Pull loop tightly to draw stitches together, then pull working yarn to draw loop back to usual size. Video Instructions Here

Notes
– Beg chs of each rnd do not count as 1st st, join each rnd in 1st st, not beg ch.

Starting The Base

With the X/25mm Hook
Rnd 1 RS. Ch4, join with sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch2, work 10 hdc in circle, join with sl st. (10hdc)

Rnd 2. Ch1, work 2 hdc in each st around, join with no cut join method (special instructions above). (20hdc) (diameter should measure about 8.5 – 9 inches across)

Starting Basket Sides

Rnd 3. Ch1, working in blo, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (20sc)

Rnd 4. Ch1, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (20sc)

Rnd 5 RS. Ch1, sc in each st around, join with sl st, TURN. (20sc) (height should measure about 5.5 inches tall)

Starting Ears

–  Make sure you TURNED your work as stated in the previous rnd, you’ll be working the last rnd on the wrong side, this will allow the right side of the ears to face you when you turn the basket back to the right side after finishing the final rnd.

– When you turn your work, the last st of the previous rnd will now become the first st of the new rnd.
– If your ears are curling and puckering too much, try working the sts a bit looser.
– You’ll work the 1st ear starting at the beg of the rnd, and complete the 2nd ear at the end of the rnd.

Switch to the P/15mm Hook
Rnd 6 WS.
Sl st in 1st st, starting 1st ear, *ch 7, working in blo, dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch*, switch back to X/25mm Hook, loosely sl st in remaining 19 sc.
Switch to the P/15mm Hook, starting 2nd ear, repeat from * to *, join in beg sl st, turn basket right side facing you. (stitch count for each ear 2dc, 1hdc,1sc, sl st)

Fasten off, weave in loose ends, and move to tail instructions below.

Tail Instructions

– Full video instructions here, fast forward to minute 21.34.

– I used a small amount of  Lion Brand Go For Faux, (super bulky, in the color Husky) & an L hook.
– I recommend using a hot glue gun to attach tail, but you can also use the tail ends to sew it on, just don’t fasten the ends off where noted below.
– You can use a pom pom with scrap yarn, in exchange for the faux fur.

Rnd 1. Leaving a long tail end, create a magic circle, ch1, work 10 hdc in circle, join with sl st in beg hdc. (10hdc)

Rnd 2. Ch1, 2 hdc in each st around, join with sl st in beg hdc. (20hdc)

Rnd 3. Ch1, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join with sl st in beg hdc. (30hdc)

Rnd 4. Ch1, hdc2tog around, join with sl st in beg hdc. (15hdc)

Finishing Tail

Starting with beg tail end, cinch tail to close circle (pull gently as the Go For Faux yarn breaks easily), weave through a few stitches to secure closed, do NOT fasten off, stuff inside tail.

Take ending tail, weave in and out around last rnd of sts, pull tail end gently to cinch closed (if needed stuff with a little bit of Polyfil or scrap yarn, before cinching all the way closed).

Weave through a few stitches to secure circle closed, fasten off and weave in loose ends, hot glue in place.

Optional Handle

The Jumbo Crochet Bunny Basket Pattern worked up in vintage white yarn and filled with Easter eggs.

The original pattern was meant to be more of a decorative piece, to add florals or create a cute centerpiece, but after many requests for a handle, I decided to add one!

Keep in mind, the basket is made out of yarn, therefore, it may not be as sturdy as a traditional Easter Basket. Heavy items may weigh the bottom down, and the ears will be a little floppy, if it’s being carried around.

Notes
– Full video instructions here, fast forward to minute 26.
– I used a small amount of the Bernat Blanket Extra Thick yarn and the P/15mm hook.

Row 1. Leaving a 12 inch beginning tail, ch15, working in back humps, sc in 2nd ch from hook, and remaining chs across. (14sc)

Fasten off leaving a 12 inch ending tail.

Take another long piece of yarn, about 24 inches, and attach it to the end of the handle without tails (I used a crochet hook to pull the yarn through one corner, and then pulled the tail back through the opposite corner). You’ll want a tail coming out of each corner.

Attaching The Handle

Attach the handle on this inside of the basket using the tail ends, just under the last rnd of sl sts, and measure about 4 sts over from each ear.

Using the crochet hook, weave the tail ends of the handle in, until they are nice and secure. Make sure the handle is staying in place tightly, and once fully secure, cut remaining tails to finish off.

Your Jumbo Crochet Bunny Basket is complete, enjoy!!
