Let’s learn how to make The Crochet Tulip Placemat & Doily Pattern with the simple instructions provided below!
Have you tried The Picot Placemat & Doily Set? I designed the Crochet Tulip Placemat & Doily Pattern to complement that set. It incorporates many of the same stitches, along with the addition of beautiful tulips.
This Crochet Tulip Placemat & Doily Pattern is rated intermediate and worked in the round using tube yarn (my favorite)!
The pattern also includes fun color-change techniques to help you create the tulips.

How To Style The Crochet Tulip Placemat & Doily
The Crochet Tulip Placemat & Doily Pattern features a beautiful floral design.
I enjoy using the placemats in a spring table setting. They add a pretty pop of color and would be stunning to display for a ladies’ luncheon, Mother’s Day, or a tea party.

The doily is an ideal size for displaying on a sideboard, shelf, or dresser, where it can hold a plant or a candle.

Yarn Suggestions For The Crochet Tulip Placemat & Doily Pattern
The Tulip Placemat & Doily Pattern is written using Lion Brand Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn, a size 6 super bulky tube-style yarn. The colors shown are Cream, Eggplant, Pumpkin, Mustard, and Olive.
You can also use Bernat Maker (two strands held together); the gauge is very similar. This is also a tube- style yarn, but it’s size 5. The colors shown are Cream, Jam, Fawn, and Lichen.
When crocheting the tulips, feel free to mix and match the Lion Brand Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® with Bernat Maker to create different color combinations.
Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarn
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)
Note: Lion Brand Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn is polyester, and Bernat Maker is filled with nylon. Therefore, neither yarn is recommended for use as a hot pad or potholder.
Alternative Yarn Suggestions
Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out smaller or larger depending on what you use. If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly.
Sizing For The Crochet Tulip Placemat & Doily Pattern
The Tulip Placemat Crochet Pattern is offered in two sizes. Blocking is not required; however, a light steam may help the piece lay a bit nicer. The sizes below are after a light steaming.
The placemat measures approximately 15 inches in diameter.
The mini doily measures approximately 9 inches in diameter.

Special Stitches
No-Cut Join Method – Full video instructions here
This method creates a less visible seam, especially when working in the back or third loop only.
Instead of joining the end of a round with a slip stitch, remove hook from loop. Insert hook from back to front under both bars of first stitch of round. Put working yarn back onto hook and draw through to the back. Pull loop tightly to draw stitches together, then pull working yarn to draw loop back to usual size.
Treble or Triple Crochet (tr)
Yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch, and draw up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over again and pull through next 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through last two loops on hook.
Reverse Single Crochet (rsc) aka Crab Stitch – Full video instructions here
Working from front to back, insert hook in next stitch to the right and complete a single crochet.
Color Changes
Normally, you would change color on the last pull-through of the last stitch. With this pattern, the technique is a little different. You want the top of every stitch to finish off in the main color, leaving only the front of the stitch in the contrasting color.
For example, in this pattern, your main color is cream. When you get to Color B (a green single crochet), you will use the special color change techniques below to work your stitch. The front of the stitch is the only part that changes color, and the top of the stitch remains cream.
NOTE: I prefer to crochet across my contrasting yarn, but you can carry it if you don’t mind having floats on the backside of your placemat.
Single Crochet Color Change with Color B (tulip stem)
When you get to the single crochet with Color B, drop the Main Color, then complete the following steps, making sure to work loosely:
Step 1: Insert hook in indicated stitch (in this case, the next single crochet), with Color B, yarn over, and pull up a loop. (2 loops on hook, 1 CB, 1 MC)

Step 2: Drop Color B, pick up Main Color, yarn over, and pull through remaining 2 loops on hook.

Puff Stitch Color Change with Color C (tulip)
Crochet puff stitches are a series of unfinished half double crochet stitches that are worked together. For this tutorial, we will use 3 half double crochets to create our puff stitch. Some puff stitches require a chain to finish the stitch, but this pattern does not.
The puff stitches (made with Color C) are worked in the center of the single crochet stitches from the previous round. Instead of inserting your hook in the top of the stitch as usual, insert your hook between the two posts, as shown in the 1st photo below.
Tip: Work with loose tension and pull loops up to the height of the working row.
When you get to the puff stitch with Color C, drop the Main Color, then complete the following steps:
Step 1: Yarn over with Color C, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook, 2 CC, 1 MC)

Step 2: [Yarn over with Color C, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop]2x (7 loops on hook, 6 CC, 1 MC)

Step 3: Drop Color C, yarn over with Main Color, pull through remaining 7 loops on hook.
