Learning How to Make Chunky Crochet Plant Pot Covers is easier than ever with my Chunky Planter Sweater pattern!

These crochet plant pot covers, also known as planter sweaters or plant cozies, are a fun, quick way to dress up plain pots and give your plants a new look! I’ve designed a few different planter patterns over the years, but this chunky version was my first, and still a fan favorite.

They’re also perfect for using up leftover yarn and make fantastic market items or last-minute gifts. I especially love them around Christmas to add cute trees and holiday arrangements in.

Yarn Suggestions For The Crochet Plant Pot Covers

The Chunky Crochet Plant Pot Covers Pattern is written using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (two strands held together) This is a size 6 super bulky yarn.

Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarn
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)

Yarn Alternatives

I haven’t personally tested alternative yarns for The Chunky Crochet Plant Pot Covers pattern, but most size 6 yarns should work well. Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use.

Sizing For The Chunky Crochet Plant Pot Covers

The Chunky Crochet Plant Pot Covers Pattern comes in three sizes:

Mini – 3 inch diameter & 3 inches tall, fits pot approximately 2.25 inch diameter & 2 – 2.25 inches tall
Small – 3.75 inch diameter and 4 inches tall, fits pot approximately 3.5 inch diameter & 3.5 – 3.75 inches tall
Large – 5 inch diameter and 4.5 inches tall, fits pot approximately 4.75 inch diameter and  4 – 4.25 inches tall

You can easily adjust the pattern by adding or removing increase rounds and adding or removing single crochet rounds to change height. The remainder of the pattern is followed as is, you’ll just have different stitch and round count.

Tips & Tricks For The Crochet Plant Pot Covers

Two Strands of Yarn
This pattern is worked holding two strands of yarn together, which creates a sturdy, structured planter, similar to my crochet basket patterns. If you find it difficult to work with two strands, you can use one strand instead. Just note that your planter cover will turn out slightly smaller and may conform more closely to the shape of your pot.

Creating Different Bottom Shapes
For a flatter bottom, work in the back loop only (blo) when starting the first round of single crochet.

For a more rounded bottom, work in both loops and join with a standard slip stitch.
(The large poinsettia planter shown below is worked in both loops.)

Color Changes
Change colors wherever you’d like, and choose whether to work in BLO or both loops to customize your look. (The large poinsettia planter shown below is worked in both loops.)

Adjusting Height
Add or remove rounds of single crochet to reach your desired height.

Planter Sources

My favorite places to get faux plants for the Chunky Crochet Plant Pot Covers are Ikea and Target. There are many similar sized plants sold at other big box stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

Note: All plants shown are from Target or Ikea, however, inventory changes year to year, so they may no longer be available. I find the stores carry similar sizes each year, but the styles may change slightly. The Christmas colors shown in the photo below are Cranberry, Kale and Fisherman.

Several Christmas themed Chunky Crochet Plant Pot Covers (Sweaters) displayed on a table. The colors are green. red, and cream.

The pattern was specifically designed to fit the following plants from Ikea:

– The mini version fits the 2.25 inch faux Fejka brand plants that are carried at Ikea.
– The small version fits the 3.5 inch faux Fejka brand plants that are carried at Ikea.
– The large version fits the 4.75 inch faux Fejka brand plants that are carried at Ikea.

The small plants shown are size 3.5 inches from the Fejka collection at Ikea. Follow the instructions below for the size small cover.

Ikea also has a great seasonal line for Christmas. I continue to use the 2.25, 3.5, & 4.75 inch sizes that they offer. Their winter line has been called a few different names over the years such as Vinter, Vinterfest, and Vinterfint.

The mini tree & poinsettia shown below are size 2.25 inches from the seasonal collection at Ikea and fit the size mini pattern instructions below.

They also carry a 3.5 inch Christmas tree that fits the size small pattern nicely.

Note: The cream colors shown below are made without switching colors, and the last round is slip stitches instead of single crochet.

After completion of the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a tapestry needle, weave tail end under both loops of the first stitch of the round. Next, weave through the back loop only of the last stitch of the round. Weave in tail.

Special Stitch: No-Cut Join Method
Instead of joining the end of a round with a slip stitch, remove hook from loop. Insert hook from back to
