How To Make A Small Crochet Basket – Trinket Tray

If you’re looking for a quick project to ease back into the new year, make a fast Valentine’s gift, or just add a cute accent to your home year-round, this Small Crochet Basket Pattern is perfect! This adorable trinket tray is just the right size for jewelry, and also doubles as a coaster or decorative candle holder.

While the pink shades in my sample make it perfect for Valentine’s Day, this little tray can be made in any color and displayed all year. Its tiny size makes it ideal for a nightstand, desk, or entryway.

Featuring a 7-loop puff stitch and only six rounds, this basket works up in about half an hour using super bulky yarn.

Grab your yarn, hook, and supplies, and let’s get started!

Styling Ideas For Your Small Crochet Basket – Trinket Tray

This versatile small crochet basket, or “trinket tray,” can add a charming touch anywhere in your home. It sits perfectly on a nightstand, dresser, or desk to hold small essentials such as jewelry, trinkets, or spare change. It also works beautifully as a decorative coaster, mug rug, or candle holder—just be sure to never leave candles unattended, as yarn is not fire-resistant.

Yarn Suggestions For Your Small Crochet Basket – Trinket Tray

The Trinket Tray Pattern is written using size 6 super bulky yarn. I prefer Lion Brand Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn. The colors shown below are Cream and Sandstone.

Below are the suppliers I recommend:

Alternative Yarn Suggestions

Two strands held together of Bernat Maker is a great alternative for the pattern. It works up with an almost identical gauge and looks just as pretty. If using two strands of the Bernat Maker, you’ll need to double the yardage to 50 yards. The colors shown below are Soft Peach and Jam.

You’re welcome to experiment with different yarns, just keep in mind that your gauge may vary depending on the fiber content and thickness. Personally, I prefer a tube yarn for this project as it gives the best outcome.

Screw-On Tags For Your Trinket Tray

The cute trinket trays can be displayed as is, although the addition of a cute tag really finishes them off! I used vegan leather heart tags from Savlabot.

The tags are attached with Chicago Screws, which I purchase on Amazon. I get the 5x10mm in the color Bronze.

For a complete list of the different crochet tags I use see full post here.

Gauge Working in The Round

First 3 Rounds in Pattern = 4.25 Inches with L Hook

Please be sure to check your gauge before starting, as tension can vary greatly from person to person and depending on the yarn used.

Special Stitches

Note: Several photo examples are shown in pattern instructions below.

Invisible Join
After completion of the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a tapestry needle, weave tail end under both loops of the second stitch of the round. Next, weave through the back loop only of the last stitch of the round. Weave in tail.

7-Loop Puff Stitch (ps)
Crochet puff stitches are a series of unfinished half double crochet stitches that are worked together. For this tutorial, we’re going to use 3 half double crochets to create our puff stitch.

Tip: Work with loose tension and pull loops up to the height of the working row.

Step 1: Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)
Step 2: [Yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop]2x (7 loops on hook)
Step 3: Yarn over and pull through all seven loops on hook.

Chain One Space (ch1-sp)
A chain space is the space/gap in your work that is created by making a chain. The space is located below the chain.  Normally, you’d insert your hook into the front and back loops of the stitch, but when you work into a chain space, you insert your hook into the space underneath the chain.
