The Lil Tweed Basket Crochet Pattern is a quick, chunky basket made by holding two strands of size 5 bulky yarn together. The finished basket has a sturdy shape, simple built-in handles, and is perfect for holding small items around your home.
This design was originally created with Mary Maxim Aspen, a beautiful tweed yarn that was gifted to me by Mary Maxim. That yarn has since been discontinued, but the pattern can easily be made with other size 5 bulky yarns held double.
The Lil Tweed Basket is rated advanced beginner and is a great project if you’re ready to practice working in the round and learn a few new finishing techniques, including the no-cut join method shown below.
This pattern is also closely related to my Little Handle Basket Crochet Pattern, so if you’ve made that basket before, this one will feel very familiar. The main difference is the yarn weight and gauge, with the Lil Tweed Basket using two strands of size 5 bulky yarn held together.

The Lil Tweed Basket Crochet Pattern is written using two strands of size 5 bulky yarn held together. The original sample was made with Mary Maxim Aspen in the color Alpine, a tweed yarn that was generously gifted to me by Mary Maxim when I first designed this pattern.
Please note: Mary Maxim Aspen has since been discontinued. You do not need this exact yarn to make the basket. Many size 5 bulky yarns will work well when two strands are held together, although the finished size and gauge may vary slightly depending on the yarn you choose.
Alternative Yarn Suggestions
For a currently available alternative, I recommend Lion Brand Hue + Me, a size 5 bulky yarn that should work nicely for this pattern when two strands are held together.
You can also experiment with other size 5 bulky yarns. For the best results, look for a yarn with enough structure to help the finished basket hold its shape. Softer or more flexible yarns can still be used, but may create a basket with a slightly different finished size or feel.
As always, be sure to check your gauge before beginning and adjust your hook size if needed.

The Lil Tweed Basket Crochet Pattern is offered in one size.
Finished Size: Approximately 5 inches in diameter and 3 ½ inches tall.
Gauge | Working in the Round
First 3 rounds of the pattern = approximately 3 ¾–4 inches across with a J/10 (6mm) crochet hook.
Because the original Mary Maxim Aspen yarn has been discontinued, your finished size may vary slightly depending on the size 5 bulky yarn you use. Be sure to check your gauge before starting and adjust your hook size if needed.
Tips & Tricks
The key to having a sturdy basket it to create a very tight stich by using a small hook in comparison to the yarn size. The completed basket should be sturdy, yet flexible. Over time it can become misshaped. You can easily re-shape with your hands. I also find it helpful to form it around a heavy bowl about the same size, then remove the bowl to reveal a nice, new, even shape.

Important: Be sure to follow the Lil Tweed Basket written instructions and stitch counts, since the two patterns use different yarn weights, hook sizes, gauge, and stitch counts.
Special Stitches
Chain Space (ch-sp)
A chain space is the space/gap in your work that is created by making a chain. The space is located below the chain. Normally you’d insert your hook into the front and back loops of the stitch, but when you work into a chain space you insert your hook into the space underneath the chain.
Special Stitch: No-Cut Join Method
Instead of joining the end of a round with a slip stitch, remove hook from loop. Insert hook from back to
front under both bars of first stitch of round. Put loop back onto hook and draw through to the back. Pull
loop tightly to draw stitches together, then pull working yarn to draw loop back to usual size.
Instructions
– Pattern is worked holding two strands of yarn together
– Beg chs of each rnd do not count as 1st st, join each rnd in 1st stitch, not beg ch
Rnd 1. Create a magic circle, ch1, work 10 hdc in circle, join with sl st. (10hdc)
Alternate Method: Ch4, join with sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch1, work 10 hdc in circle, join with sl st. (10hdc)
Rnd 2. Ch1, work 2 hdc in each st around, join with sl st. (20hdc)
Rnd 3. Ch1, *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join with sl st. (30hdc) (diameter should measure about 3 ¾ – 4 inches across)
Rnd 4. Ch1, *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join with sl st. (40hdc)
Alternate Join Method: join using the no cut join method (special instructions above), this will create a less noticeable seam. (diameter should measure about 5 inches across)
Starting Sides of Basket
Rnd 5. Ch1, working in blo, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (40sc)
Rnd 6-9. Continue working in both loops, ch1, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (40sc)
Notes: On rnd 10, the same stitch as the beginning ch8 is counted as 1st skipped stitch.
Rnd 10. Starting the handle *ch8, sk next 8 sc, sc in next 12 sc, repeat from * around, DO NOT JOIN (16chs, 24sc)
Rnd 11. *work 9 sc in ch-sp, sc in next 12 sc, repeat from * around, DO NOT JOIN. (42sc)
Finishing Rnd 12.
Loosely sl st in each st around, fasten off, weave in loose ends, and sew on optional logo tag. (42sl st)
