Let’s make the Mini Crochet Color Block Basket, a quick and modern crochet basket that’s perfect for organizing all the little things around your home.
This pattern is the smaller companion to my XL Crochet Color Block Basket and is made with Bernat Blanket Extra Thick Yarn. The jumbo yarn gives the basket a soft, chunky texture while still creating enough structure to hold its shape.
The Mini Crochet Color Block Basket Pattern is rated intermediate and uses simple single crochet stitches throughout. You’ll also practice working in the round, changing colors, working in the back loop only, and finishing with a seamless invisible join.
These little baskets are great for holding odds and ends throughout your home. Use them for craft supplies, desk accessories, bathroom essentials, or make a colorful set for a nursery to hold pacifiers, socks, bows, and other small baby items.

Seasonal Gift Basket Ideas for the Mini Color Block Basket
The Mini Color Block Basket is fun to make for more than just storage. It also works really well as a small seasonal gift basket you can fill with treats, scrubbies, candles, towels, and other little extras.

Yarn
The Mini Crochet Color Block Basket pattern is written using size 7 jumbo yarn. I partnered with JOANN and used Bernat® Blanket Extra Thick™ Yarn.
The colors shown are Vintage White, Gold, Clay, and Blue Spruce. I had one ball of each color, but used only a small amount of each. You’ll definitely have enough to make several baskets.
The Bernat® Blanket Extra Thick™ Yarn is very thick. If you’re not used to working with such thick yarn, it can be difficult at first, but I promise, if you keep going you will get used to it. I found the knife/overhand grip worked best, even though I’m typically a pencil grip. The overhand grip gave me a little more strength to pull the heavy yarn through, especially since the basket requires a bit of a tight stitch.
The Mini Basket is flexible, yet sturdy enough to stand upright without additional support. It’s easy to reshape with your hands, when needed.

Alternative Yarn Suggestions
Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out smaller or larger depending on what you use.
If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. The best way to create a sturdy basket is to use a nice thick yarn and tight stitch.
I haven’t tried any alternative yarns with The Mini Crochet Color Block Basket, but there are several yarn alternatives to Bernat Blanket Extra Thick yarn, that can be found from the suppliers below.

Sizing
The finished Mini Crochet Color Block Basket diameter measures approximately 8 inches, and the height is approximately 5 inches.
You can easily adjust the size of your basket.
- To increase the diameter, add additional increase rounds before starting the sides of the basket.
- To Increase the height, add addition single crochet rounds when working the sides.

- Color A: Vintage White — 1 ball
- Color B: Gold, Clay, or Blue Spruce — 1 ball
- Yardage Note: If you choose not to do the color change, you’ll need approximately 20 yards total, or one ball, with quite a bit of yarn left over.
- Crochet Hook: Size U.S. U/X (25mm) Crochet Hook, or size needed to meet gauge
- Notions: Large Eye Tapestry Needle, Flexible or Standard Measuring Tape, and Scissors

Special Stitches
Invisible join
After completion of the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a tapestry needle (finger or crochet hook, in this case), weave tail end under both loops of the first stitch of the round. Next, weave through the back loop only, of the last stitch of the round. Weave in tail.
Instructions
– Beg ch/chs of each rnd does NOT count as st, work 1st st in same st as beg ch/chs.
– Join each rnd to beg sc, unless otherwise noted.
– The basket is worked in the rnd from the bottom up.
Starting at base with color A
Rnd 1. Ch2, work 8 sc in 2nd chain from hook, join with sl st. (8sc)
Rnd 2. Ch1, work 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st. (16sc)
Starting Body/Sides:
Rnd 3. Ch1, working in blo, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (16sc)
Rnd 4. Ch1, continue working in BOTH loops, sc in each st around, fasten off, join with invisible join. (16sc)
Attach color B, under blo, of 1st st of rnd.
Rnd 5. Ch1, working in blo, sc in each st around, fasten off, join with invisible join. (16sc)
Weave in loose ends using a large eyed tapestry needle, your finger, or a smaller crochet hook. Your Mini Crochet Color Block Basket is complete, enjoy!
