Crochet Heart Coaster and Hot Pad Set | Free Crochet Pattern

Let’s make a Crochet Heart Coaster and Hot Pad Set for Valentine’s Day! Who doesn’t love a fun gift on Valentine’s Day? Giving this cute set to a friend, teacher, or neighbor makes the perfect gift! The plus side is they’re really fast and easy to make, so you can make several sets in just a few hours.

Have you seen my Crochet Heart Pattern yet? I’ve shared it a few times lately, and you may have seen it featured as part of my Crochet Heart Garland Pattern or Crochet Heart Dish Scrubby. It’s a very basic heart, made with just one or two round of stitches, and I’ve been playing around with it, to come up with a few new designs. By adding just a few extra rounds, it transforms the heart into this beautiful Crochet Heart Coaster and Hot Pad Set!

I chose to use cotton yarn, because it needs to withstand heat and moisture. I used multiple strands held together, which makes a really thick coaster and hot pad, and works up really fast! It’s an advanced beginner pattern, with one color change, and uses basic crochet stitches throughout. The Crochet Heart Coaster and Hot Pad Set is a great project to try if you’re ready to move from a beginner level, and learn a few new techniques, such as working in the round and changing colors.

Yarn

The Crochet Heart Coaster and Hot Pad Set is written using size 3, light weight, 100% cotton yarn (4 strands held together). Using the four strands held together makes the coaster and hot pad extra thick, to help absorb heat and moisture.

I used K+C Essential Cotton Yarn (from JOANN) in the colors Rose Garden and Cream. I was originally looking for a size 4 cotton, but once I touched this yarn, I instantly felI in love with how soft it was. If you prefer a size 4 cotton, I’m sure three strands held together would be comparible.

Tip: When using four strands held together, you can use two skeins and pull from the outside and center of each skein. I found this yarn easily accommodated that method, without tangling much.

Sizing

The finished Crochet Heart Coaster measures approximately 4.5 inches across, and the Crochet Heart Hot Pad measures 6.5 inches across.

Heart approximately 18 yards
Secondary color for coaster approximately 26 yards
Secondary color for hot pad approximately 48 yards
I prefer K+C Essential Cotton Yarn (from JOANN)

L11/8mm Crochet Hook (or size to meet gauge)
Tapestry Needle
Flexible or Standard Measuring Tape
Scissors

Optional
Leather Tags from Savlabot, Angie & Britt, or Grain Deep
Chicago Screws to attach leather tags.

Gauge

First round in pattern = 3 inches at widest point

Special Stitches

Invisible join
After completion of the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a tapestry needle, weave tail end under both loops of the first stitch of the round. Next, weave through the back loop only, of the last stitch of the round. Weave in tail.

Instructions

Notes
– Complete rnd 1 & 2 for the coaster and hot pad, then move to the proper instructions below.
– Pattern is worked with four strands of yarn held together.

Starting With The Heart

Full video instructions for the heart can be found below, follow rnd one only, using the cotton yarn outlined in this pattern.

In color of choosing (I used Rose Garden)
Rnd 1. Create a magic circle, ch3, (working in circle) 2tr, ch1, 3dc, ch1, 1tr, ch1, 3dc, ch1, 2tr, ch3, sl st. (21 sts including chs)

Fasten off and weave in loose ends. The heart is complete, move to color change rnd below.

Continuing With Secondary Color (coaster & hot pad)

Attach 2nd color, under blo, of 1st ch from rnd 1 (I used Cream).
Work entire rnd 2 under blo.
Rnd. 2. Ch3 (does not count as st), tr in same st as ch3,
Dc in next ch, hdc in next 4 sts,
Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in the next 5 sts,
Dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 4 sts,
Dc in next ch, tr in last ch, sl st to beg tr to join. (26sts)

Continue to coaster or hot pad instructions below.

Coaster Continued

Rnd 3. Loosley sl st around. If the coaster is curling up try working looser, or switch to a larger hook.

Fasten off, using the invisible join method, weave in loose ends. Attach optional leather tag from Savlabot, Angie & Britt, or Grain Deep with a Chicago screw, if desired.

Hot Pad Continued

Note: beg ch does not count as st.
Rnd 3. Ch1, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around, join with sl st in beg sc. (39sc)
Rnd 4. Ch1, *sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around, join with sl st in beg sc. (52sc)

Rnd 5. Very loosley sl st around, If the coaster is curling up try working looser, or switch to a larger hook.

Fasten off, using the invisible join method, weave in loose ends. Attach optional leather tag from Savlabot with a Chicago screw, if desired.
