Tired of your kitchen towels slipping off the oven or dishwasher handle every time you open the door? You’re not alone— but don’t worry— let’s solve the problem and learn How To Make The Button Closure Crochet Towel Holder Pattern!
You might remember my original 2 ring design, The Crochet Towel Holder Pattern | 3 Ways. However, this new version gets rid of a ring and adds a button.
As a result, it’s the perfect solution for those who can’t fit a ring around their appliance handle.
The Button Closure Crochet Towel Holder Pattern (also known as towel topper) is not only trendy right now, but they’re also incredibly practical in the kitchen.
Just loop the holder around your oven or dishwasher bar, button it closed, and then feed your towel through—no more towels on the floor!
Moreover, they work up in no time, making them a fantastic project for market prep or last-minute gifting. Think Mother’s Day, teacher appreciate, or housewarming gifts!
Finally, pair it up with a cute seasonal towel, and you’ve got a best-seller for markets—or a go-to gift!

Yarn Suggestions For The Button Closure Crochet Towel Holder
The Button Closure Crochet Towel Holder Pattern is written using Bernat Maker (two strands held together).
In case you’re new to it, Bernat Maker is a size 5, bulky, tube-style yarn, made of cotton on the outside and nylon in the center of the tube.
The color shown is Cream.
I love this yarn, but it can be hard to find. Therefore, I suggest stocking up when it’s available.
Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)
Yarn Alternatives
I’ve had a lot of questions regarding substitutions for Bernat Maker, but honestly I haven’t found one, especially one that can be purchased in stores.
It’s a tube yarn with a cotton shell, almost jersey/T-shirt like, and a nylon filling, therefore, making it hard to find something similar. I love working with it, and I love the look of it.
It can be a bit expensive, but the skeins are big, so they go a long way. I have a lot of patterns I’ve written with this yarn, because I love it so much. If anyone has a substitute suggestion for me, please let me know.
The good news is, with the Crochet Towel Holder Pattern, you can really use whatever yarn you’d like. For example, I think t-shirt yarn, cotton yarn, macrame cording, or even acrylic yarn would look nice.
Keep in mind, it will be in the kitchen and there may be a bit of pulling and tugging, so you want something that will hold up to all of that. Other than that, use whatever you think will work for you.
Additionally, you can find a detailed list of supplies on my Amazon Associates Account here.
Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use.
If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly.
The most important thing is to have a nice tight stitch, that won’t stretch out much.
Sizing For The Button Closure Crochet Towel Holder
The approximate band length, not including the ring, is 5 inches and the width varies from about 3.25-4 inches.
The width of the pattern is very easy to adjust by adding or subtracting chains from the foundation chain, (ending with an even number of stitches). In addition, you may need to adjust the placement of the buttonhole, if you add width to the pattern.
To make holder longer, add extra rows (in increments of 2), before completing the last 3 rows of the patterns below. Other than that, the rest of the pattern is followed exactly, you’ll just have a different stitch count.
Additionally, if you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly.
Wooden Rings
You’ll need one wooden rings. I purchased 4″ Wooden Rings from Amazon. The outside diameter is 100mm (approximately 3.9″-4″), and the inside diameter should be about 2.7″-2.8″.
I went a little larger than what I’ve seen on other towel holders, as I feel the smaller rings made it harder to feed the towel through, and they bunched up too much.
Additionally, If you go smaller, I suggest not going under 3″. The 4″ still holds the towel in place nicely, and shouldn’t fall out easily.
Buttons
The Button Closure Crochet Towel Holder Pattern is an alternative version to 2 ring Crochet Towel Holder Pattern that I originally designed.
Specifically, it’s designed for those who can’t fit the rings in the space between their appliance and handle.
I used a toggle style button that measures approximately 1.75 inches by .60 inches, but you can experiment with different button sizes.
I purchased mine from Ingute on Etsy. It’s an overseas shop, but I’ve been purchasing from them for years. I’ve never had any issues, and the quality and price are amazing!
