Learn how to make a Crochet Planter Cover with my quick and easy Pirouette Planter pattern! Originally designed as a mini crochet planter cover, this reader-favorite pattern now includes three sizes for covering small faux plants and planters.
These crochet planter covers—sometimes called planter sweaters or plant cozies—are one of my favorite ways to completely change the look of an inexpensive plant pot. They’re quick to make, use very little yarn, and are easy to customize for different seasons and decorating styles.
I especially love making them for Christmas. Add a mini faux tree or poinsettia, Spanish moss, and a seasonal tag for an easy handmade gift, place setting, or holiday market item. They also look great year-round with faux succulents and greenery.

Yarn Suggestions
The Mini Crochet Planter Pattern is written using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. This is a size 6, super bulky yarn. The colors shown below are Fisherman, Fossil, & Moonlight.
Wool Ease T&Q offers many great colors, perfect for Christmas and Winter. A few other colors I like are Starlight, Cranberry, and Kale.

Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use. I like to use two strands of bulky weight yarn held together, as well as three strands of worsted weight held together, to get similar results.

Planter Sources
My favorite places to get faux plants are Ikea and Target. There are many similar sized plants sold at other big box stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.
The specific plants I used for this pattern are as follows:
- The mini version fits the 2 ¼” faux Fejka brand plants that are carried at Ikea.
- The small version fits the 3 ½” faux Fejka brand plants that are carried at Ikea. (succulent shown below)
- The large version fits the 4 ¾” faux Fejka brand plants that are carried at Ikea.
For Christmas: IKEA also carries seasonal faux plants that work beautifully with these planter covers. I’ve used several of their mini Christmas trees over the years, along with their seasonal faux poinsettias. I continue to use the 2 ¼”,3 ½”, & 4 ¾” sizes that they offer. Their winter line has been called a few different names over the years such as Vinter, Vinterfest, and Vinterfint.
The Faux Mini Tree Planters below, fit the size mini pattern. They also carry a 3 ½” Christmas tree that fits the size small pattern.
You may also like The Faux Mini Poinsettia from Ikea. It’s seasonal during Christmas only. The size mini pattern was followed.
Tags & Labels

- The vegan leather & wooden seasonal tags (shown below) are from Savlabot.
- The custom logo tags are from Angie and Britt & Grain Deep . They also offer some fun seasonal tag designs.
The suede tags are attached with Chicago Screws, which I purchase on Amazon. I get the 5x10mm in the color Bronze.
Styling Idea: Add your planter as part of a place setting on your Christmas table, as shown here. It doubles as a take home gift for your guest. Add a cute little name tag around the top, for something even more personal! The Placemat Pattern shown below, can be found here.
Sizing
The pattern comes in three sizes:
Mini – 2 ½” diameter & 2 ¾” tall, fits pot approximately 2 ¼” diameter & 2” tall
Small – 3 ½ ” diameter and 4” tall, fits pot approximately 3 ½” diameter & 3 ½ – 3 ¾” tall
Large – 5” diameter and 4 ½” tall, fits pot approximately 4 ¾” diameter and 4 – 4 ¼” tall.
The pattern is easy to customize. To adjust the width, add or subtract increase rounds as needed. To adjust the height, simply add or subtract rounds of single crochet. Follow the remainder of the pattern as written, keeping in mind that you’ll have a different stitch and round count.

First 2 Rounds in Pattern Size Small & Large = 3 Inches with L Hook
First Round in Pattern Size Mini = 2 ¼” – 2 ½” Inches with L Hook

Special Stitches
Reverse Single Crochet (rsc) aka Crab Stitch
Working from front to back insert hook in next stitch to the right and complete a single crochet.

Special Stitch: No-Cut Join Method
Instead of joining the end of a round with a slip stitch, remove hook from loop. Insert hook from back to
front under both bars of first stitch of round. Put loop back onto hook and draw through to the back. Pull
loop tightly to draw stitches together, then pull working yarn to draw loop back to usual size.

Crochet Planter Cover Instructions
– Beg ch/chs of each rnd do not count as 1st st, join each rnd in 1st stitch, not beginning ch/chs.
– The cover is worked from the bottom up.
– The cover is made to fit snug, and should be stretched in place over the planter to stay in place better.
– If you prefer not to use a magic circle on rnd 1, ch4, join with sl st in 4th ch from hook, and then continue rnd 1 as is.
Crochet Planter Cover Size Mini
Rnd 1. Create a magic circle, ch2, work 14 dc in circle, join with no cut join method (instructions above). (14dc) (diameter should measure about 2 ¼”- 2 ½” across)
Rnd 2. Ch1, working in blo, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (14sc)
Rnd 3-6. Continue working in both loops, ch1, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (14sc)
(height should measure about 2 ¼” tall, add additional rnds here if you’d like your cover taller)
Rnd 7. Ch1, rsc in each sc around, add an extra rsc in the joining sl st from previous rnd. (15rsc)
Fasten off, weave in loose ends, and attach optional tags. Stretch and adjust the little planter cover over the planter of your choice, and add Spanish moss around the base of the plant, if desired.

Thank you so much for the darling pattern! I’m busy making many of them for Christmas gifts! I can’t remember if I saw a little wooden crate (kinda off-white) with all 3 trees inside – believe the outside of the crate said “Christmas trees”…went & looked at Hobby Lobby, but couldn’t find it & then wasn’t even sure you had included a picture of that … LOL! If it is something you posted, could you please let me know where you purchased it? Thank you! :o)

You’re welcome, and yes, It’s a wooden crate that I got from the Target bullseye section last year. I’ve seen different styles throughout the year, so I’m sure they’ll get them back again this year, I can’t find them online.

Thanks for the tutorial! Can I ask, what is the purpose of the slip stitch after every round? Why not just keep going with the single crochet for the remaining rounds?

You’re welcome! You can definitely do that, I just prefer the joining method so the round height is even. If you continue in a continues round, you will have a step up (taller stitch) left over on the last round. It can still work, there are just a few extra steps to finish it off properly, and you may also have to use a stitch marker to keep track of the rounds.
