Crochet Pumpkin & Sunflower Coasters Using My Scrubby Patterns

Don’t you just love when one crochet project turns into something completely different with a simple yarn swap? I wasn’t planning to make fall crochet coasters, but after switching the scrubby yarn from two of my existing patterns to a coaster-friendly cotton-blend yarn, these Crochet Pumpkin & Sunflower Coasters came together perfectly.

I made both a Crochet Pumpkin Coaster and Crochet Sunflower Coaster using the exact same stitch patterns as my Pumpkin Scrubby and Sunflower Dish Scrubby. No pattern changes were needed—just a different yarn.

I also added my favorite screw-on Coffee Love tags to each coaster. The tag is cute on both designs, but I especially love it on the pumpkin because I positioned it at the top to look like a little pumpkin stem.

Patterns Used for These Crochet Coasters

One of the best things about these coasters is that you don’t need a separate pattern to make them. I used my existing Pumpkin Scrubby and Sunflower Dish Scrubby patterns exactly as written—the yarn swap is what turns them into soft, sturdy coasters instead.

The Best Yarn for Crochet Coasters

For the original scrubby patterns, I used nylon scrubby yarn. For the coaster versions, I switched to Lion Brand Made With Love The Cottony One, using two strands held together.

I used the colors below:

• Pumpkin: Flaming Amber
• Pumpkin Leaves: Olive Twist
• Sunflower Center: Hot Cocoa
• Sunflower Petals: Gold Medal

A quick yarn note: Lion Brand Made With Love The Cottony One is a cotton blend, not 100% cotton. I’m comfortable using it for coasters under warm or hot drinks, but I would not use it for potholders, trivets, or anything that will come in direct contact with high heat from the oven. For those projects, I recommend sticking with 100% cotton yarn.

Changing the yarn completely changes the look and feel of these patterns. Instead of a textured kitchen scrubby, you end up with a softer, flatter project that’s perfect for using under coffee mugs and drinking glasses.

I really liked The Cottony One for these because holding two strands together creates a thick, sturdy coaster without making it feel overly bulky. It also shows the stitch detail much better than the scrubby yarn, which is especially pretty on the sunflower petals and the shaping of the pumpkin.

Can I Use a Different Yarn?

Absolutely. For crochet coasters, I recommend cotton yarn first because it creates a sturdy, absorbent fabric that holds up well to regular use.

A cotton-blend yarn can also work well for everyday coasters. The yarn I used, Lion Brand Made With Love The Cottony One, is 60% cotton and 40% acrylic, which works well for use under coffee mugs, drinking glasses, and other everyday beverages.

I generally avoid recommending acrylic yarn for projects that may be exposed to higher heat because synthetic fibers can soften or melt. For anything that needs to withstand much higher heat, such as potholders, hot pads, or trivets, I recommend using 100% cotton yarn, whether regular or mercerized.

Keep in mind that changing the yarn weight or hook size will also change the finished dimensions. If you’re making a set, use the same yarn and hook throughout so your coasters stay consistent in size.

Add a Screw-On Tag to Your Crochet Coasters

One of my favorite details on these coasters is the little Coffee Love screw-on tag from Savlabot. I added one to both designs, and I love how such a small detail changes the finished look.

For the pumpkin coaster, I placed the tag vertically near the top so it actually looks like a little pumpkin stem. This ended up being one of my favorite details on the coaster.

On the sunflower coaster, I added the Coffee Love tag as a simple decorative accent.

When adding a screw-on tag to a coaster, I recommend using a short Chicago screw so the hardware doesn’t stick up too far or interfere with your cup. I used a 6mm screw, which worked well with the thickness of the coaster and kept the tag sitting fairly flat. I also recommend placing the tag near the outer edge so your mug can sit flat in the center.

Screw-on tags are also a great finishing option for crochet projects you plan to gift or sell at craft fairs. They’re quick to add and give the finished project a clean, professional look.

Crochet Coaster Gift Ideas

These little coasters would make an easy handmade gift, especially for fall.

A few simple ways to use them:

• Make a coordinating set of pumpkin and sunflower coasters.
• Pair a coaster with a favorite coffee mug.

You could also make multiples of one design if you want a matching set rather than mixing the two.
