The heart-inspired texture doesn’t have to be limited to Valentine’s Day. Simply changing the yarn colors can give The Puffy Heart Crochet Basket a completely different look for each season.
For fall and Halloween, I used warm shades of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn in the colors Fisherman, Pumpkin, and Butterscotch to give the basket a cozy seasonal feel. You could also try Christmas colors, soft spring shades, or neutral yarns for an everyday version that works year-round.

The Puffy Heart Crochet Basket Pattern is designed using Size 6 super bulky yarn. My preferred yarn is Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick.
The colors shown in the original baskets are Cranberry, Rouge, and Potion.
Wool-Ease Thick & Quick works especially well for crochet baskets because the thick yarn and tight stitches help create a sturdy finished shape.

Another yarn option for this pattern is Lion Brand Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn.
The gauge with Lazy Days Thick & Quick is slightly smaller than Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, so your finished basket may also turn out a little smaller.
You can experiment with other Size 6 super bulky yarns as well, but keep in mind that yarn thickness can affect both the gauge and finished size. For a sturdy crochet basket, I recommend choosing a thick yarn and maintaining a fairly tight stitch throughout the pattern.
Screw-On Crochet Tags

For the Puffy Heart Crochet Basket, I used large faux suede seasonal screw-on tags from Savlabot.
You’ll also need Chicago Screws to attach the tags securely to the basket.
Sizing for The Puffy Heart Crochet Basket Pattern
The Puffy Heart Crochet Basket Pattern includes three sizes, making it easy to choose a small catch-all, medium basket, or shallow tray.
- Mini: Approximately 5.5–6 inches in diameter × 3 inches high
- Medium: Approximately 6.5–7 inches in diameter × 5.5 inches high
- Tray: Approximately 9–9.5 inches in diameter × 3 inches high
The pattern is worked in multiples of 3, so the sizing can also be adjusted. To make the basket larger or smaller, add or subtract increase rounds while making sure the base ends with a stitch count that is a multiple of 3.
You can also customize the height by adding or removing puff-stitch rounds and changing colors as desired.
Gauge | Working in the Round
First 3 rounds of the pattern = approximately 4–4.25 inches using a Size L-11 (8mm) crochet hook.
Be sure to check your gauge before beginning, as tension can vary from person to person and may also change depending on the yarn you use.

Special Stitches
Chain Space (ch-sp)
A chain space is the space/gap in your work that is created by making a chain. The space is located below the chain. Normally you’d insert your hook into the front and back loops of the stitch, but when you work into a chain space you insert your hook into the space underneath the chain.
Invisible join
After completion of the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a tapestry needle, weave tail end under both loops of the first stitch of the round. Next, weave through the back loop only, of the last stitch of the round. Weave in tail.
7 Loop Puff Stitch (ps)

Crochet puff stitches are a series of unfinished half double crochet stitches that are worked together. For this tutorial, we’re going to use 3 half double crochets, to create our puff stitch. Some puff stitches require a chain 1, to finish off the stitch, but this pattern only chains one where noted.
Tip: Work with loose tension and pull loops up to the height of the working row.
Step 1: Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
Step 2: [Yarn over, insert hook in same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop]2x (7 loops on hook)
Step 3: Yarn over and pull through all seven loops on hook
Tips & Tricks
The key to having a sturdy basket it to create a very tight stich, using a thick yarn. The completed basket should be very sturdy, yet flexible. Over time it can become misshaped. You can easily re-shape with your hands. I also find it helpful to form it around a heavy bowl about the same size, then remove the bowl to reveal a nice, new, even shape. If you’re basket is quite loose, you may need to go down a hook size or two.

- When switching colors, fasten off & join new color with a sl st. The first ps of the round will hide the joins, so no fancy method is needed.
