What Is Tube Yarn?
Tube yarn is made with a woven/knit fabric on the outside, and filled with various fibers on the inside, typically polyester or nylon. This process gives tube yarn its unique structure and texture, making it popular for various knitting and crocheting projects.
It makes a great alternative to T-shirt yarn, as it has a more consistent size throughout each skein. I especially love it for homewares, such as baskets and planters, as it has a very modern look.

Where To Purchase Tube Yarn
I love Bernat Maker, they recently re-branded and have a bunch of new colors! It has a tendency to sell out often, so I recommend stocking up. The skeins are very large, so I feel like you get a lot for the price.

Yarn Comparison
Bernat Maker has been one of my favorite yarns, for many years now. If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ve seen me use it in many basket and planter patterns, and you know I speak highly of it. Its original name was Bernat Maker Home Dec, but was recently re-branded, and shortened to Bernat Maker. The yarn has a soft pillowy touch, and offers great stitch definition. Its modern look makes it a great choice for home decor.
Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn is newer to me. It came out recently, and I jumped on the opportunity to try it, as I’m a lover of Lion Brand, and use their yarns often. It too is soft and pillowy, however, this one feels a bit silkier, and has a slight sheen to it. Again, this yarn is perfect for home decor projects, and has great stitch definition.
Below you’ll see each yarn worked up using The Boxy Basket crochet pattern. I used two strands of Bernat Maker and only one strand of Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn. The baskets turned out very similar.

Yarn Weight
Bernat Maker is a size 5, bulky yarn.
Skein/Ball Size: 250g / 8.8 oz, 290 meters / 317 yards
I tend to use two strands held together, as I typically use this yarn for basket patterns, that need a little extra stability. Two strands of Bernat Maker works up slightly larger than one strand of Lion Brand Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick®
Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn is a size 6, super bulky yarn.
Skein Size: 250g / 8.8 oz, 114 meters / 125 yards
One strand alone, offers great structure and stability for baskets and planters.
I made a swatch for each yarn, using the color Cream. Each swatch consisted of 8 rows of 8 single crochet. I used one strand of Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn and two strands held together, of Bernat Maker.
Here are my results:

Bernat Maker (two strands held together), was slightly larger, coming in at just under 3.75×3.25 inches.
The Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn came in at 3.5×3 inches.
Fiber Content
Bernat Maker is made with 72% cotton and 28% nylon. The tube is made with 100% cotton, and then filled with nylon.
Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn is 100% polyester. Both the tube and the filling are polyester.
Care Instructions
Both yarns are machine wash and dry. I always recommend washing on gentle and drying on low (or air dry), when working with handmade knitting and crochet projects.
Color Choices
The color choices for both yarns are amazing! I’d say there are very similar color options offered in both brands. You can see the Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn are a little brighter, whereas the Bernat Maker colors are more subtle, and natural looking. The Cream yarn for each brand is almost identical when side by side.

Tips When Using Tube Yarn
When weaving in your ends, the needle has a tendency to get stuck in the woven fibers of the tube, and snag the yarn. I recommend using a blunt tipped needle/drawstring threader.
Which Yarn Is Perfect?
The perfect tube yarn does not exist, because I love them both, for different reasons!!
I love the look and feel of both of these yarns, and highly recommend each of them. Using two strands of Bernat Maker, it is very interchangeable with one strand of Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn, with only a very slight difference in gauge. Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn works up just a bit denser and more structured than the Bernat Maker.
Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn has a somewhat silkier feel, where as the Bernat Maker is cotton, giving it a more soft, organic feel. Appearance wise, they both look amazing. The Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn has a slight sheen, making the Bernat Maker come across a little more natural or organic.
