How To Make The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin Pattern

Let’s learn how to make The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin Pattern! The pattern was designed with the cutest little bumps, that emulate the knucklehead or knobby pumpkin variety. Its unique texture creates a realistic pumpkin to display around your home.

The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin Pattern is rated advanced beginner and worked in the round, using super bulky yarn. You’ll learn the two double crochet bobble stitch and how to easily create ribbing around the pumpkin. This one works up very quickly and comes in two fun sizes!

If you’ve been following along my crochet pumpkin series, you probably have a full pumpkin patch started, and The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin Pattern is a great one to add to the mix!

Let’s get started!

Styling Ideas For The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin

The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin adds a beautiful and unique touch to your Fall decor. The texture looks great paired with a candle, plant, or knick-knack. It’s fun to create a nice grouping on a shelf or tray, to display in any corner of your home.

Yarn

The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin Pattern is written using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. This is a size 6, super bulky yarn. My favorite colors to use are Pumpkin, Butterscotch, and Oatmeal, but there are so many other beautiful colors in the line-up. Fall leaves and mustard are some other favorites of mine!

Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarn
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)

Yarn Alternatives

The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin Pattern is flexible with many yarns. Feel free to experiment, but note the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use. If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly.

I love using two strands of bulky yarn held together. The most important thing is to have a nice tight stitch that will hide the Poly-fil from showing through.

Some of my favorite yarn alternatives are as follows:
Bernat Maker (2 strands held together)
Lion Brand Rewind Tape Yarn (2 strands held together)
Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me (2 strands held together)
Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn
Fluff of the Andes from WECrochet

The photo below shows a velvet yarn in mustard, that has been discontinued, but try Bernat Velvet (two strands held together) for a comparative alternative.

Sizing

The pattern comes in two sizes and is worked in multiples of 3:

Small – Approximately 2.5 inches tall, 14 inch circumference (not including stem)
Large – Approximately 3 inches tall, 17.5 inch circumference (not including stem)

The pattern is worked in multiples of six. You can simply add an increase round of half double crochet to the instructions, if you’d like a larger pumpkin, or subtract a round of half double crochet, if you’d like a smaller pumpkin.  The instructions for the sides of the pumpkin will be exactly the same, just a larger or smaller stitch count.

Stems

My favorite stem option for The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin Pattern is wooden branches you find laying around outside (give them a good wash and let them air dry). Cinnamon sticks or wine corks work well too. In addition, you can buy real wooden sticks on Amazon. They’re all cleaned and ready to use, just look closely at the size description, as the photos can be misleading.

Another fun option is to use vegan or Ultrasuede tags as stems. I recently created a blog post on the different crochet tags I use. The full post with extensive detail can be found here.

– The vegan leather leaves and give thanks tags (shown below), are from Savlabot.
– The Ultrasuede custom logo tags (shown as the stem below), are from Angie & Britt. They also offer leaves and some fun seasonal tag designs.

Reference Steps 1-3 below for finishing off your pumpkin.

Step 1

Weave tail end in and out around last rnd of sts.  I worked under both loops.

The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin Pattern - Step 1

Step 2

Pull tail end to cinch closed. Use caution if using tape or velvet yarn, as it tends to break easily. If you’d like, leave a small opening for the stem, or just glue it right on top.

The Knobby Crochet Pumpkin Pattern - Step 2

Step 3

Take tail end and insert tapestry needle through the bottom center of pumpkin, push needle up through the top center, and pull tight to create the first ridge.  Repeat step 3 evenly around the pumpkin until you have a total of 6 ridges around the pumpkin.

Your pumpkin is finished!!  Your pumpkin is finished!!  Weave in the loose end, adorn with stems, leaves, and ribbons, as desired!!  I use a hot glue gun to add the stem.
