The Harvest Crochet Pumpkin is made with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, a size 6 super bulky yarn that creates a soft, chunky pumpkin with beautiful stitch definition. One of my favorite things about this pattern is how easy it is to customize! While the pattern is written using super bulky yarn, you can experiment with different yarn weights to create pumpkins in a variety of sizes.
If you use a different yarn, be sure to adjust your hook size as needed to maintain a firm fabric. A tight stitch helps prevent the Poly-fil stuffing from showing through.

My Favorite Stem Options
One of the easiest ways to create a realistic stem for your Harvest Crochet Pumpkin is to use small tree branches found outdoors. Simply give them a good wash and allow them to dry completely before using them. Cinnamon sticks and wine corks also make great stem options, or you can purchase pre-cut natural wood sticks on Amazon. If you buy them online, be sure to check the dimensions carefully, as product photos can sometimes be misleading.
For a more decorative look, I also love using vegan leather or Ultrasuede tags as pumpkin stems. They add a unique finishing touch and make each pumpkin feel a little more custom. Sizing
The Harvest Crochet Pumpkin pattern includes two sizes:
- Small: Approximately 2½ inches tall with a 14-inch circumference (not including the stem)
- Regular: Approximately 3 inches tall with a 17–18-inch circumference (not including the stem)
One of my favorite things about this pattern is how easy it is to customize! Simply add or subtract increase rounds (in increments of 10 stitches), then adjust the number of plain single crochet rounds to create a larger or smaller pumpkin. The remainder of the pattern is worked the same—you’ll just have a different stitch count throughout.
Gauge | Working in the Round
First 3 rounds = 4¼ inches using an L (8.0 mm) crochet hook
Be sure to check your gauge before you begin, as everyone’s crochet tension is different. Your finished pumpkin size may also vary slightly depending on the yarn and hook you choose.
Special Stitches
Invisible Single Crochet Decrease (inv-scdec)
Insert hook into front loop only of 1st st, insert hook into front loop only of next st, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through last 2 loops on hook. (counts as 1 single crochet)

– Do not join at end of each round unless otherwise noted, mark the 1st st of each round with st marker
All Sizes
Rnd 1. Create a magic circle, ch1, work 10 hdc in circle. (10hdc)
Alternate Method: Ch4, join with sl st in 4th ch from hook, ch1, work 10 hdc in circle. (10hdc)
Rnd 2. 2 hdc in each st around. (20hdc)
Rnd 3. *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * around. (30hdc)
(diameter should measure approximately 4 ¼ inches across)
Fasten off leaving a 30-40 inch tail end. Weave in beg tail end. Reference Steps 1-3 below for finishing off your pumpkin.

Rnd 4-8. sc in each st around. (30sc)
Rnd 9. *sc in next st, inv-scdec in next st, repeat from * around. (20sc)

Rnd 4. *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * around. (40hdc)(diameter should measure approximately 5 ½ inches across)
Rnd 5-9. sc in each st around. (40sc)
Rnd 10. *sc in next 2 sts, inv-scdec in next st, repeat from * around. (30sc)
Rnd 11. *sc in next st, inv-scdec in next st, repeat from * around. (20sc)
Rnd 12. inv-scdec around, join with sl st in beg sc. (10sc)
Fasten off leaving a 30-40 inch tail end. Weave in beg tail end. Reference Steps 1-3 below for finishing off your pumpkin.
Finishing Off Your Pumpkin
Step 1.
Weave tail end in and out around last rnd of sts.
Step 2.
Fill pumpkin with Poly-fil and pull tail end tightly to cinch closed. Tip: don’t overfill or you’ll see the Poly-fil through the gaps in the yarn.
Step 3.
- Using a tapestry needle, take the remaining yarn tail, wrap it around the outside of the pumpkin’s body, pushing it up through the bottom center of the pumpkin.
- Continue to push needle all the way through to the top center, and pull tightly, to create the first rib.
- Repeat step 3 evenly around the pumpkin until you have a total of 5 ridges around the pumpkin.
- Weave in the loose end, add stem and embellishments as desired. I use a hot glue gun to hold them in place.
