Let’s make The Crochet Feather Pumpkin Pattern! This pumpkin pattern has the most amazing texture created from the feather stitch and produces a stunning, round pumpkin, without ribbing.
The Crochet Feather Pumpkin Pattern is rated Intermediate and worked in the round, using super bulky yarn. The stitch pattern may seem intimidating at first, but with the help of the video tutorial, I know you’ll get it. Once you figure it out, you’ll be using the feather stitch for everything!
If you’re looking for a unique pumpkin pattern, that works up quickly, The Crochet Feather Pumpkin Pattern is a great one to try.
Let’s get started!

Yarn
The Crochet Feather Pumpkin Pattern is written using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. This is a size 6, super bulky yarn. My favorite colors to use are Mustard, Pumpkin, Butterscotch, and Fisherman (shown below), but there are so many other beautiful colors in the line-up. Fall leaves is a new favorite of mine!
Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarn
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)

Yarn Alternatives
With the Crochet Feather Pumpkin Pattern, you can really play around with many different yarns. The pattern is very forgiving, and sizing and gauge isn’t imperative. Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but note the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use. If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. I love using two strands of worsted weight or bulky yarn held together, but you can also use thinner or bulkier yarn. The most important thing is to have a nice tight stitch that will hide the Poly-fil from showing through.
Some of my favorite yarn alternatives are as follows:
Bernat Maker (2 strands held together, shown below in the color Cream & Clay)
Lion Brand Rewind Tape Yarn (2 strands held together, shown below in the color Citronella)
Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me (2 strands held together)
Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn

Sizing
The pattern comes in two sizes:
Small – Approximately 3.25 inches tall, 17-18 inch circumference (not including stem)
Large – Approximately 4 inches tall, 22-23 inch circumference (not including stem)
The pattern is worked in multiples of two, therefore, you can easily adjust the size as long as you start with a base that has an even number of half double crochet. You can simply add an increase round of half double crochet to the instructions if you’d like a larger pumpkin, or subtract a round of half double crochet, if you’d like a smaller pumpkin. The instructions for the sides of the pumpkin will be exactly the same, just a larger or smaller stitch count.
Stems
The easiest option for the stem on The Crochet Feather Pumpkin Pattern is wooden branches you find laying around outside (give them a good wash and let them air dry). Cinnamon sticks or wine corks work well too. In addition, you can buy real wooden sticks on Amazon. They’re all cleaned and ready to use, just look closely at the size description, as the photos can be misleading.
Another fun option is to use vegan or Ultrasuede tags as stems. I recently created a blog post on the different crochet tags I use. The full post with extensive detail can be found here.
– The vegan leather leaves and give thanks tags (shown below), are from Savlabot.
– The Ultrasuede custom logo tags (shown as the stem below), are from Angie & Britt. They also offer leaves and some fun seasonal tag designs.

Special Stitches
Chain Space (ch-sp)
A chain space is the space/gap in your work that is created by making a chain. The space is located below the chain. Normally you’d insert your hook into the front and back loops of the stitch, but when you work into a chain space you insert your hook into the space underneath the chain.
Beginning Feather Stitch (beg feather st)
Yarn over, insert hook into next chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), **note-when you pull up any loop make sure it is the same height as other loops on hook, bring the hook up parallel to the work so the loop is elongated**, yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch/chain space right below current chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in next chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (7 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.

Feather Stitch (feather st)
Yarn over, insert hook into the same chain space where the last leg of the previous feather was made, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), **note-when you pull up any loop make sure it is the same height as other loops on hook, bring the hook up parallel to the work so the loop is elongated**, yarn over, insert hook into skipped stitch/chain space right below current chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook in next chain space, yarn over and pull up a loop (7 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on the hook.

Invisible Single Crochet Decrease (inv-scdec)
Insert hook into front loop only of 1st st, insert hook into front loop only of next st, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through last 2 loops on hook. (counts as 1 single crochet)

Finishing All Sizes
Fasten off leaving a long tail end to cinch closed.
Reference Steps 1-4 below for finishing off your pumpkin.
Step 1
Weave tail end in and out around last rnd of sts. I worked under both loops.

Step 2
Pull tail end to cinch closed. Use caution if using tape yarn, as it tends to break easily. If you’d like, leave a small opening for the stem, or just glue it right on top.

Step 3
Create an indent by inserting tapestry needle through the top center of pumpkin, then pushing needle through to the bottom center. (pumpkin side view shown below)

Step 4
Push needle back up through bottom center of pumpkin through top center, pulling tightly to create an indent in the top center. Weave needle around top where you cinched it closed to keep indent in place (repeat steps 3 & 4 if necessary) & fasten off once secure.

Your Crochet Feather Pumpkin is finished!! Adorn with stems, leaves, ribbons, and flowers as desired. I use a hot glue gun to attach the stems that I picked in the woods.
