The Crochet Herringbone Pumpkin Pattern worked up in a set of five, in mustard, pumpkin, olive, and cream yarn.

How To Make The Crochet Herringbone Pumpkin Pattern

Learn how to make The Crochet Herringbone Pumpkin Pattern, with this quick and easy, advanced beginner crochet pattern and video tutorial!

The Crochet Herringbone Pumpkin Pattern is worked flat, in rows, and seemed together to create a traditional pumpkin shape. The easy repeat design features a linked single crochet to create a slight herringbone design. The instructions include three sizes, however the pattern is very easy to adjust to any size you’d like.

If you’re looking for an easy pumpkin pattern to start off the Fall season, The Crochet Herringbone Pumpkin Pattern is a great one to try. It’s slightly more advanced than The Mini Ribbed Pumpkin Pattern, but creates an interesting design with built in ribbing throughout. Let’s get started!

Styling Ideas For Your Crochet Herringbone Pumpkin

The Crochet Herringbone Pumpkin makes a wonderful addition to your home decor. Placing multiple pumpkins on a decorative tray or shelf, alongside a candle and plant, creates a lovely grouping that elevates any space during the Fall season.

Try mixing and matching many different crochet pumpkin designs, sizes, and yarns, to create a unique pumpkin patch in your home!

Yarn

The Crochet Herringbone Pumpkin Pattern is written using Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn. This is a size 6, super bulky, tube style yarn. My favorite colors to use are Mustard, Pumpkin, Olive, Amber, and Cream.

Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarn
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)

Yarn Alternatives

Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use. If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. I love using two strands of worsted weight or bulky yarn held together, but you can also use thinner or bulkier yarn. The most important thing is to have a nice tight stitch that will hide the Poly-fil from showing through.

Some of my favorite yarn alternatives are as follows:
Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick
Bernat Maker
(2 strands held together)
Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me (2 strands held together)

Sizing

The pattern comes in three sizes:

Small – Approximately 2.25 inches tall, 10 inch circumference (not including stem)
Medium – Approximately 3 inches tall, 12 inch circumference (not including stem)
Large – Approximately 4 inches tall, 15 inch circumference (not including stem)

The pattern is very easy to adjust by adding or subtracting chains to the foundation chain, and adding or subtracting rows of linked single crochet (making sure you end with an odd number of rows, so you’ll have a tail at each end, once you join the ends). The rest of the pattern is followed exactly, you’ll just have a different stitch count.

Stems

The easiest option for the stem on The Crochet Herringbone Pumpkin is wooden branches you find laying around outside (give them a good wash and let them air dry). Cinnamon sticks or wine corks work well too. In addition, you can buy real wooden sticks on Amazon. They’re all cleaned and ready to use, just look closely at the size description, as the photos can be misleading.

Another fun option is to use vegan or Ultrasuede tags as stems. I recently created a blog post on the different crochet tags I use. The full post with extensive detail can be found here.

– The vegan leather leaves and give thanks tags (shown below), are from Savlabot.
– The Ultrasuede custom logo tags (shown as the stem below), are from Angie & Britt. They also offer leaves and some fun seasonal tag designs.

If you add additional rows to the band, it should be made in odd increments.

Make sure the beginning and ending tail are on the same side of the rectangle before joining the band. This will allow you to cinch each side without attaching a new piece of yarn.

Joining Ends

You will now join the foundation chain and last row together to form a continuous piece.

Fold the short sides of the piece together & line up the sts (the foundation row should be facing you). Very loosely sl st through the remaining loops of foundation ch & both loops of the last row of sc & linked sc, repeat across until the piece is fully joined.

Fasten off leaving a long tail end (approximately 12-15 inches).

Forming The Pumpkin

Using a tapestry needle, take foundation tail end, weave it in & out around row ends & cinch closed. Weave in tail end, turn pumpkin right side facing out & fill with Polyfil.

Weave remaining tail end in & out around final row ends & cinch closed (you can leave a slight opening in the middle to fit the stem). Weave needle around top (where you cinched it closed), until it’s nice and secure. Fasten off and weave in loose ends.

Finish pumpkin off with stem, ribbon, and other embellishments as desired, using glue or a hot glue gun.
