Let’s learn how to make The Sugar Crochet Pumpkin Pattern! This pumpkin pattern was designed to look similar to those cute sugar pumpkins, used for making pumpkin pie. The pattern produces a simple, round pumpkin, without ribbing.
The Sugar Crochet Pumpkin Pattern is rated advanced beginner, worked in the round using super bulky yarn, and uses a mix of single and double crochet, to create the lemon peel stitch.
If you’re looking for a no fuss, easy pumpkin pattern, that works up quickly, The Sugar Crochet Pumpkin Pattern is a great one to try. Pair it with The Farmhouse Crochet Pumpkin Pattern and The Harvest Crochet Pumpkin Pattern to create a beautiful pumpkin patch, full of varying textures, colors, and sizes.
Let’s get started!

Yarn
The Sugar Crochet Pumpkin Pattern is written using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. This is a size 6, super bulky yarn. My favorite colors to use are Mustard, Pumpkin, Butterscotch, and Fisherman.
Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarn
Amazon or Like To Know It (LTK)

Yarn Alternatives
Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use. If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. I love using two strands of worsted weight or bulky yarn held together, but you can also use thinner or bulkier yarn. The most important thing is to have a nice tight stitch that will hide the Poly-fil from showing through.
Some of my favorite yarn alternatives are as follows:
Bernat Maker (2 strands held together)
Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me (2 strands held together)
Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn
Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick® Yarn (shown below in the colors Cider, Cinnamon Stick, and Squash)

Sizing
The pattern comes in two sizes:
Small – Approximately 3 ½” tall, 14” circumference (not including stem)
Large – Approximately 4 ½” tall, 17” circumference (not including stem)
The pattern is very easy to adjust by adding or subtracting increase rounds and adding or subtracting as many work even rounds as you’d like, just be sure to end each round with an even number and alternate between single and double crochet. The rest of the pattern is followed exactly, you’ll just have a different stitch count throughout.
Stems
The easiest option for the stem on The Sugar Crochet Pumpkin is wooden branches you find laying around outside (give them a good wash and let them air dry). Cinnamon sticks or wine corks work well too. In addition, you can buy real wooden sticks on Amazon. They’re all cleaned and ready to use, just look closely at the size description, as the photos can be misleading.
Another fun option is to use vegan or Ultrasuede tags as stems. I recently created a blog post on the different crochet tags I use. The full post with extensive detail can be found here.
– The vegan leather leaves and give thanks tags (shown below), are from Savlabot.
– The Ultrasuede custom logo tags (shown as the stem below), are from Angie & Britt. They also offer leaves and some fun seasonal tag designs.

Finishing All Sizes
Fasten off leaving a long tail end to cinch closed.
Reference Steps 1-4 below for finishing off your pumpkin.
Step 1
Weave tail end in and out around last rnd of sts. I worked under both loops.

Step 2
Pull tail end tightly to cinch closed. You can leave a small opening for the stem, if you prefer. (I closed mine completely and glued the stem directly on top).

Step 3
Using the remaining tail end, thread the yarn on long tapestry needle, insert tapestry needle through the top center of pumpkin, pushing needle through the bottom center.

Step 4
Push needle back up through bottom center of pumpkin and then through the top center, pulling tightly to create an indent in the top center. Weave needle around top where you cinched it closed to keep indent in place, and fasten off once secure.

Your pumpkin is finished!! Adorn with stems, leaves, ribbons, and flowers as desired, I use a hot glue gun to attach the stem that I picked in the woods!
