Let’s learn how to make a Crochet Pumpkin Garland for Fall!! This quick and easy crochet project uses The Mini Ribbed Pumpkin Pattern and the addition of a crochet ball garland, to create a cute and simple garland, that’s strung on twine. It’s a beginner friendly project and perfect to display throughout Thanksgiving.
The Crochet Pumpkin Garland pattern creates a fun, two stranded garland, that can be draped on a mirror, banister, or fireplace mantle. The pattern is rated advanced beginner, uses very basic crochet stitches, and works up quickly. You’ll have fun working in rows and rounds, and learn how to easily seam up a pumpkin.
Let’s get started!
Ways To Style Crochet Pumpkin Garland
Below is an example of how I styled the Crochet Pumpkin Garland around my mirror and fireplace mantel. I used small command hooks in each corner of the mirror and mantel to secure the twine. Simply tie a knot around the hook. I like to create a nice drape by hanging one garland slightly lower than the other.

Another fun option, is to create a ball garland without spacing, just make as many balls as you’d like and place them closely together. I really love this look, as it can be displayed on its own, and with colors for any season. Stay tuned for a fun Christmas version!

Yarn
The Crochet Pumpkin Garland is written using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. This is a size 6, super bulky yarn. The colors shown are Mustard, Butterscotch, and Fall Leaves.
Wool Ease T&Q offers many great colors, perfect for Fall. A few other colors I like are Pumpkin and Flax, as well as any of their neutral colors, such as Fossil, Wheat, Oatmeal, Barley, and Graphite.
Below are the suppliers I recommend:
Lion Brand Yarn
Amazon

Alternative Yarn
Feel free to experiment with different yarns, but please note the gauge may turn out slightly smaller or larger depending on what you use. If you change the yarn size of the project, be sure to adjust your hook size accordingly. The most important thing is to have a nice tight stitch that will hide the Poly-fil from showing through.
Some of my favorite yarn alternatives are as follows:
Cover Story™ Lazy Days Thick & Quick® Yarn
Bernat Maker (2 strands held together)
Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me (2 strands held together)
Another fun yarn I tried was a roving yarn, Fluff of the Andes from WECrochet. The colors shown below are Caution and Solar Flare. The roving yarn was a little bit harder to work with, but it reminded me of those cute wool ball garlands that can be found in stores. The outcome was adorable.
My biggest tip for working with this yarn, is to be very careful when weaving the ends in. Work slowly and pull very gently, as it has a tendency to break easily. If closing the magic circle (for the ball garland portion) is causing breakage for you, try creating a circle by chaining 3 or 4, then join to your first chain with a slip stitch, and work the rest of the pattern as is.

Sizing
The garland length is fully customizable. I made six mini pumpkins and nine balls, and the garland fit perfectly on my fireplace mantle that measures 45 inches long. When measuring the twine length, cut it several feet longer than you need, to allow room for drape and hanging.
Stems
The easiest option for the stem on The Mini Ribbed Pumpkin is wooden branches you find laying around outside (give them a good wash and let them air dry). Cinnamon sticks or wine corks work well also. In addition, you can buy real wooden sticks on Amazon. They’re all cleaned and ready to use, just look closely at the size description, as the photos can be misleading.
Another fun option is to use vegan or Ultrasuede tags as stems. I recently created a blog post on the different crochet tags I use. The full post with extensive detail can be found here.
– The vegan leather leaves and give thanks tags (shown below), are from Savlabot.
– The Ultrasuede custom logo tags (shown as the stem below), are from Angie & Britt. They also offer leaves and some fun seasonal tag designs.

Size 6, Super Bulky Yarn
Yardage will depend on the length you make, I used far less than a skein for each color I used. Each pumpkin takes less than 20 yards, and each ball is about 4 yards.
I prefer Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (results will vary depending on yarn used)
L11/8mm Crochet Hook (or size to meet gauge)
Tapestry Needle
Twine (varies depending on the length garland you make, I used about 160 inches total)
Scissors
Flexible Measuring Tape
Poly-Fil or Extra Yarn for Filling
Dried Branch for Stem (glue or glue gun to attach)
Optional – Ribbon and/or leaf embellishments
Gauge
Gauge Working in Rows for Pumpkin
8 sts & 10 rows of sc working in BLO = 3.5 x 3.5 Inches with L Hook
Gauge Working in the Round for Ball Garland
1st 2 rounds in pattern = 2 Inches Across with L Hook
Please be sure to check your gauge before starting, as tension can vary greatly from person to person and depending on the yarn used.

Crochet Ball Garland Instructions
– Create 9 balls total, or amount desired (I created 3 in each color)
– Beg ch of each rnd does not count as st, work 1st st in same st as beg ch.
Rnd 1. Starting with a 12” beg tail, create a magic circle, ch1, work 6 sc in circle, join with sl st. (6sc)
Rnd 2. Ch1, work 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st. (12sc)
Rnd 3. Inv-scdec around, join with sl st. (6sc)
Fasten off leaving a long tail end. Weave in the beg tail to secure and then stuff tail inside the ball, no need for Polyfil! Take ending tail and weave in and out of the front loops of last round, cinch closed, weave in loose ends, and fasten off.
Adding The Crochet Balls To Twine
Take a long piece of twine (approximately 80 inches) and thread the crochet balls on using a tapestry needle. I thread through the center where I created the magic circle, and push the needle back through the top where I cinched the ball closed. Adjust the spacing as desired.
Set aside and head to pumpkin instructions below.

Pumpkin Instructions
For the crochet pumpkin garland shown, I used The Crochet Mini Ribbed Pumpkin Pattern, which is free on the blog here, but I made the pumpkins slightly smaller. I adjusted the beginning chain to 7, and only worked 19 rows total. The pattern includes video instructions, but make sure to adjust the sizing to create the smaller option, the rest of the pattern is worked as is.
For the garland shown, I created 6 pumpkins total, but you can make any amount that you prefer.
Adding Pumpkins To Twine
Take a long piece of twine (approximately 80 inches) and thread the pumpkins on using a tapestry needle. I thread through the back of the pumpkin near the stem, under a small piece of yarn. Adjust the spacing as desired.
Your Crochet Pumpkin Garland is complete. String them anywhere you’d like and enjoy!!
